Okay, my old discs were rathered knackered so I bought the complete collection.

Installing it as needed went okay and it ran, albeit my rank was showing up as 1 though my unlocks were available.

Upon trying later, all I get is returned to desktop after the splash screen.  I'm using Vista Home premium.  I've tried running in XP compatibility mode, as an administrator, altering the videocard settings (strangely enough it won't allow me to do that in notepad), everything, but no joy.  I spent ages installing this and surely I'm not going to have to do it all again.

You'd really think after all this time that EA might have sorted things out, but its not much of a sign of confidence if the compilation pack won't work.

Reinstall DX9? Also, in the shortcut to start BF2, add the folowing: +restart 1 or +restart   i don't remember which is right.

None of that worked I'm afraid, tried phoning EA tech support which was as useful as a bag of wet sand.

Well this won't work in Vista

Tried points 1 and 2 in the CTD section, no luck.

Point 3 won't work in vista for some reason

"3.Go here
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001
and here
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001\Defualt
Or get there from using my documents on desktop.
Open the video.con file with notepad and change the line
VideoSettings.setResolution ????x?????@??Hz (???? are your settings)
to
VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz
"

Tried point 4, point 5 is n/a, I can't see relevant controls for point 6, tried point 8, not applicable, point 13 doesn't apply.

Vista name for files and where it puts stuff is different then XP.

Aye, I guessed the path would be different, I just used the Documents shortcut to get there.  The difficulty is when I open the .con files in Notepad, it will let me do it, and alter them, but when I try to save it, Vista won't let me do it.

Incidentally, while it's not the exact same game, BF2142 works fine, because the 'tech support' at EA said that BF2 was old and not tested on Vista.  I've been half tempted to see if BF1942 and BF:V would work.

I decided to bite the bullet and reinstall and it seems to have worked.

However, a question, it says I have to register my booster packs, even though they seemingly installed, I wasn't asked for the code while installing.

You have to go to the ea website and register the boosters with ea using your ea account to use them. Make sure you put in the name of your BF2 solder because the boosters will be "locked" to that solder.

Also, to get past vista not letting you save after editing you have to copy the file you want to edit and put it somewhere (like desktop), edit it, save it, then move the edited version back to where the original is. For some reason vista will let you over right it will another file with the same name or delete it, but, not edit it.

Everything seems fine now, only one problem remains, the amount of times servers load and your rank has been reset and as far as I can see you don't get the points for your actualy character.  You'd think EA would have sorted this bug out by now as I remember it happening before.
