Vista 64 Install Problem

I was installing BF2 on my new system, a Gateway P7811. It has 4G of Ram, a nVidia9800 512 video card. When I tried to install it, it goes pretty well, until near the end where it just keeps spinning and getting nowhere. I have a refresh rate of 62 hertz and there's no other setting.

When I check the processes in the task manager, the BF2 voice application takes 50% of my CPU power and once I end that process, the installation finishes.

When try to start he game I never get past the initial BF2 teaser screen.

I changed my settings to being an administrator and checked the compatibility to XP service pack 2. I patched the game with the 1.41 patch and still get nothing.

What do I do next?

I tried to download the driver you suggested but after I tried to run it, I got the following message.

Nvidia setup program could not locate any driver that is compatible with current hardware.

Are you sure that it's a 9800GTX? Full system specs, please.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Yeah, be sure to download the driver that matches your graphics-card. Double check it, and as Freezer said, full system specs please

He never said it was a GTX he said it was a Nvidia9800 512...that could me multiple cards.

I know, but the probablility of it being a GTX is quite high, as the GTs have barely left the factory yet.

I'd first like to thank all of you for responding. Very cool.

Its a 9800GTS. Bestbuy was (and maybe still is running a decent deal) on the Gateway P-7811FX. I didn't want a huge hulk of a laptop, but for the price...I walked out the store with it.

Core 2 Duo 8400
4 GB Ram
P 8400 processor 2.26gHz
Vista 64 bit

I am running BF2 with admin and XP SP2 compatibility options.

It was definitely hanging on installing the BF2 voice files. Chugging 50% of my CPU and I closed it after waiting 10 minutes. After closing it, it seemed to finish the install as I got the GameSpy banner.

If you buy anything from Bestbuy, the customer service guy gave me a tip. Sometimes they run crazy specials when signing up for a Bestbuy credit card that aren't advertised. This usually happens when they haven't met a quote of new signups, so I got the 2 year free financing for signing up and the bonus Bestbuy points, but just missed out in getting 10% off for signing up. But this was the last one in the store.

the problem may be your resolution, what is the native resolution of the laptop? maybe 1440 X 900 or something like that?
You may need to force it to 800X600 or 1024 X 768 until you get the game to run then set your video options. Then you can put your desktop resolution back to what it is supposed to be the create a desktop icon with the +szx 1440 +szy 900 parameters to set resolution at runtime. BF2 does not support widscreen resolutions by default.

My resolution is 1900/1200. I cranked down the resolution to 800x600 and still it wouldn't load. This is just frustrating.

you didn't copy over your my documents folder from another pc did you? if you did you will have to delete the contents of the bf2 folder in my documents. I am pretty sure that it has to do with resolution somehow, just not sure how to fix it for you.

Nope, clean install. I guess I'm out of luck. Thanks for your help trying to figure this out.

Hey I tried installing the game again and when I getting close to having it work, the BF2VoiceSetup.exe *32 just keeps spinning and consumes up to 50% of my cpu horsepower (from the task manager), could this be the problem and is there a fix for this?

I'm not sure. I just bought the laptop a month ago. I have Directx 10 and Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221. It would seem odd to me that a laptop advertised and stickered as an "Ultimate Gaming" system wouldn't have the capabilities to play games sound.
