I use my computer for 90% of my school work, so it'd be a waste to pay a fuckload for some 1337 calculator. What's a good calculator for Windows, that does a little more than the Windows calculator?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I'm sure you can find some java applets that do graphing and whatnot. I also came across a few webpages that would integrate stuff for you.

I'm sure there's bound to be a great freeware program out there somewhere.

EDIT: Wow I'm so sorry. Haha I just realized how completely useless this post is. All I'm saying is that they're out there and I've used them... but I don't have any links or names

Besides, you probably do want to get a calculator since a teacher or professor isn't going to let you bring a laptop to an exam...

Microsoft Student with Encarta FTFW, it's the best program in the whole fucking world.

On top of the Encarta encyclopedia, you've got a Conjugation app for languages, Thesaurus, very big dictionary, and the best Math app evar.

It does all.

TI-89 > TI-84 > All

I used an 84 Plus for a year and a half

Used the 89 for a year

Seriously, at least 7x better... (not just the equations in it, but the display and the copy paste and just all the fucking functionality. So worth the extra 40 bucks or whatever)

scientific calculators are really no better than a four function. not after using a graphing calculator.

get the 89 titanium. waay more convenient than a computer program.

You can actually find emulators that will give you that exact same calculator, only in digital form...
The TI-89 is pretty damn good, but check this out...
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/358142

Pretty good, the UI actually has a picture of the calculator so its pretty much like using the real thing... only problem is that some of the letter keys enter wrong from some reason (when typing on the keyboard, if you only use mouse its perfect)

Ive used this for testing some program stuff, if you have any problems lemme know and I'll help you get it running, but I am sure you can figure it out.

If you can afford, buy the actual calculator, this thing is baller as fuck.

Walk into a maths exam with anything that has more buttons than a standard scientific calculator and they usually get taken off you. It's very easy to program them to remember formulas and give yourself notes so I never got to use one when I wanted to. lol

I dunno, I have taken every math class that is required for an engineering degree.... SOME teacher have not allowed any calculators, but any teacher who did would let you use what ever... Though some standarized tests and what not I have heard do not allow above the TI 83...

Yep

I got through 5 years of GCSE maths and ad maths (which is essentially AS level maths) without ever using a graphing calculator. Anyway, I can't remember the model of mine ... I had it yesterday but I've misplaced it -

In my first year engineering, we can only use scientific calculators in physics thermo etc classes, and no calculator at all in maths.

none of my engineering teachers have cared at all, they are all more worried about theory then math, just show your work.

I have had a math teacher or two, and one physics teacher who would not let us use any calculator... but at least for us it tends to be whatever, or nothing.

Though the physics class wasn't too bad, because he would let you approximate like mad, mainly just worried that the answer was in the same order of magnitude and semi reasonable...

Haven't come across any who require just a basic scientific calculator, hell I don't even really know anyone who has a basic scientific calcuator, every one I know have at least an 83, and I'd say most use the 89 titanium...

it seems counterproductive to ban calculators in higher learning courses. it's a tool to be used to shore up your weaknesses and such. just make us show work and clear the memory.

fact of the matter is, its more important to know which formula to use and what numbers to put where than it is to know the formulas themselves.

yup, in fact my last final had a basic theory fill in the blank first half, then an open book second half with all the calculations. Its more important to know how to find the formula you need to use then memorize random strings of variables.

memorization is for dumb people Understanding is what it is really about.
