I have a friend that who has a budget of $1300 U.S. He already has a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Whats the difference between the Intel chipset X38 and X48? He will be playing WoW, BF2, Crysis, Spore, among other such games (FPS oriented), so im thinking to get him an ATI HD 4870.

These were my specs when i built my computer in January

-Antec Nine Hundred
-Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit
-EVGA Geforce 8800gts g92
-Asus p5e

-Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (x 2)
-Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

Is there anything i can add to my friend's build? Thanks for help in advance!

q6600 x38 mobo couple raptors some ram (4 gigs is good) and vista 64 bit business is the way to go. (pretty vague I know, but I'm tired )

There is always something a few months down the road, these are computer's we're talking about. Unless it's coming out next week, there's no point in waiting. Besides, Nehalem will be extremely expensive when it comes out, new tech always is.

It would be better to buy something now (though maybe cut back on the motherboard and CPU) which will last until there are reasonably priced Nehalem processors.

I just got an E8400 with a $80 motherboard. It's not an OC machine, but damn if it won't last until Nehalem rigs are in the same price range.

Edit: The only better advice I've heard is unless you've got a lot of cash and are serious about having the best possible machine out there, the most cost-effective way to buy computer upgrades is to get mid-range components every 2 years or so. By then your current components will be phased out and the next gen won't cost an arm and a leg.
