What if time.

So let's say the US actually does gain independence from ME oil.  To the point where it is very minimal.  What then for the middle east?  Russia controls Europe basically with their oil.

So what happens to the middle east?  I know we can point to Dubai, but that is one very small example.  What's in store for the rest of them?

Hopefully there will be visionaries that are smart enough to develop other industries before the market for oil dwindles completely as the world moves on to other forms of energy production. If not economic and possible social collapse is a given on a fairly large scale.

You'll care when millions of people suddenly blame the loss of their sole source of income on us. I'm not saying it's right, but it's what will happen.

'The ME' already owns 18% of America, I guess if you do OK they will do OK.
Between now and the US gaining independence from oil you will be spending an increasing amount on oil, so the ME has ~20 years of big fat revenues ahead of them.
In 20 years time they will be sitting on an even bigger pile of gold than they are now, and lets say they will own ~30% of the US.

BTW Dubai has no oil at all, and they seem to be doing OK. Granted its a playground for the oil rich.

When pumping 240.000 barrels each day i would say that they do have some oil, Dubai is a very small emirate with only 2% of the production of the United Arab Emirates in total ... they are not dependent on their oilprodution that is correct

They don't give a shit about things like this. Most of those countries are ruled by Monarchies who have all the wealth and will continue to do so for a long time to come, even when their Oil has run out/is no longer needed. These countries may have high GDP per Capita but realistically the wealth is about as badly distributed as you can get.

the whole power balance would be different

if something like that were to happen, then we're talking about radical changes the world over, not just the ME

The Chinese and Indian appetite for oil is still massive, and should keep them going even if its at a slower rate. Take those markets away (ie, if the rest of the world was not reliant of oil), then I guess plastics production may be the way to go ( gotta do something with all that oil).

Some asshole from a royal family or dictator, same thing, will always be in control.  They have shitloads of oil but the wealth distribution doesn't exist, so the M.E. will always be a piece of shit.

More fightting I guess.  But the US will maintain a presence there, for strategic purposes.
