Quoting the last one...
This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Before McCain speaks today, veterans will haul these garbage bags filled with flags out onto the stage — with dramatic effect, no doubt — and tell the story.

“What you see in the picture I sent you is less than half of total flags,” a Republican official emailed. “We estimate the total number to be around 12,000 small flags and one full size 3×5 flag.”

I’m not sure what the DNC was supposed to do with unused hand-flags, frankly. But the Republicans are obviously questioning someone’s patriotism here.

(Democratic Party response below picture.)

https://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site36/2008/0906/20080906_021044_Flags.jpg

UPDATE I: I just spoke with the person at Invesco who found the flags and he thinks both sides are exaggerating a bit. The person claims the majority of the bags with flags in them were near the trash, on a dock, and would have been thrown away. The person thinks it was probably an “oversight” by the Democrats rather than any nefarious plot against the flag. But the person doesn’t believe anyone was coming to get them: “The flags were there for a week and a day and no one came looking for them.”

One thing I know for certain: Barack Obama didn’t order anyone to throw out 12,000 American flags.

Here are the statements from the Democrats.

“American flags were proudly waved by the 75,000 people who joined Barack Obama at the Democratic Convention. John McCain should applaud that, but instead his supporters wrongfully took leftover bundles of our flags from the stadium to play a cheap political stunt calling into question our patriotism. On the same day he agrees to join Barack Obama at Ground Zero on September 11, John McCain attacks the patriotism of Obama supporters who so proudly waved the American flag at our historic event in Denver just days ago.”
– Democratic National Committee Spokeswoman Karen Finney

“Stories circulating about flags at the Democratic National Convention are false. We distributed more than 125,000 American made flags at the Convention - the flags removed from Invesco field were intended for other events and taken without permission. It’s disappointing that someone would take American flags without authorization and then falsely describe how they were being used. We have the utmost respect for the American flag, and it’s sad to see them being used for a cheap political stunt.”
– Democratic National Convention Committee

UPDATE II: Here is a Huffington Post by Nico Pitney:

Fox News’ Carl Cameron and Bonney Kapp reported that they had “been told” that “a vendor at Invesco Field found the flags, which were going to be thrown out, and turned them over to the McCain campaign.”

The Democratic convention official says that’s not true.

“It’s pretty reprehensible on their part,” he said. “Someone made an assumption, took the flags, and essentially lied about what was going to happen to them. I mean, c’mon, we were never ever going to throw out flags.”

Having spoken to the person who found the bags, it’s difficult to believe that anyone was coming to get them a week after the convention — or that they were “stolen.” If so, what is the name of the person who was coming to pick them up? I’ve sent a query asking that question.

It sounds to me like some intern or volunteer probably made a mistake with these flags and the McCain campaign used it to pull a gotcha.

UPDATE III: There are a lot of angry emails over my comment regarding the flag (”I’m not sure what the DNC was supposed to do with unused hand-flags, frankly.”) Sorry, I’ve never disposed of an American flag in my life. But this is how if the need arises.

UPDATE IV: RedState has some photos of discarded flags. All I can say is, Republican Party better make sure every image of the flag is properly dealt with at every single rally for the rest of its existence.

...

It's a flag.

A piece of cloth.

Expendable.

If it gets tatty or if you have surplus of said item, throw it away.

What's the big deal? "Nefarious plot against the flag?" You guys are batshit crazy, haha! I'd rather believe in angels and demons and idolize a book of scripture than get my panties in a twist over some worthless bit of material at the end of a pole.

Phew, for a minute there I thought I missed the religious memo informing everyone that a worthless flag is the new official deity.

Seems I'm not alone .

Ya, we know the Democrats just sit around all day thinking "Hmmmm, now what can we do to hate America."  Then when someone finds out "Oh no it was just a mistake"

A Republican plot seems more likely.

My comment still stands.

anyway, it's not like each and every flag at the convention would have been taken aloft by a proud bald eagle and sent to heaven

https://www.flipsideshow.com/images/eagle%20on%20US%20flag.jpg

That only happens at the Republican conventions.

an upside down flag means "distress" it is not disrespect. This guy is probably making a statement that he thinks the country is in distress

Wow, and I was going for the dems being unknowing, uncaring, and disrespectful to a symbol of our nation.  You know, those same dems who love to pontificate how they really love america.  Everything they do shows the opposite.

To many of us, the flag is a LOT more than a silly cloth.  It may be that to you, but not to us.

I'd say what the flag stands for is a lot more important than the flag itself.

btw, I was half joking.  Good job on showing your bias, mister "I look at things objectively and liberals don't"

Actually, what I wrote, and what you are misquoting are :

imortal wrote:

Also, you try to sound objective, but you aren't.  I try to sound objective too.  Sometimes, I really am.  And yes, this rant are my opinions.

And once again.  All the crap I just spewed out is my opinion.  Yes.  I try to be objective.  I just do not always succeed.
Thank you for proving my point, by the way.  The misquoting, I mean.  And in the case of AussieReaper, it was apparant that he was mocking Sgt Heim.  It was hard for me to draw any other conclusion.  Also, from his earlier post about it just being a piece of cloth, I assumed that he does not understand the importance many of use put into that particular symbol.  Thus, I chided him for his mocking.  I never even did so much as call him a name, and I did not deride him in any way.  I did not even tell him (technically) that he did not understand, only that "apparently" he did not understand.

And I never claimed to be objective on this particular subject: http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=98826&p=4

I think draping a flag over a coffin is disrespectful to the soldier.  A final "screw you" from Uncle Sam to the dear departed.  A way of saying "You were a useful piece of cannon fodder in life, now you'll make good patriotic imagery for us even in death.  When your loved ones hang that flag on the wall, they'll remember their sacrifice for the 'freedom' we lied about while we enriched our own friends at your kid's expense."

Or something like that...maybe I'm just playing devil's advocate...or maybe somewhere around carrying my 20th flag-draped coffin I got a little cynical.
I never felt that way when folding the flag myself, or during all my time presenting that flag to a grieving widow with the always famous words:

"Ma'am, on behalf of the President of the United States and a grateful nation, this flag is a token of appreciation of your loved ones honorable and faithful service to this country." (We are allowed some lattitude on how to phrase it, and that one was mine.)

When I am buried, I want the flag draped over my coffin.  It is a long-standing tradition.  Men have literally died to keep the colors from touching the ground in battle.  It, like the 21 gun salute, is one of the great tokens of respect a nation can give to a fallen warrior, and more importantly, as a show of respect to the fallen that the survivors can see and appreciate.  Because, in the end, a funeral is not for the dead, but for those of us left behind.

Is your attitude toward it directed more at the current administration and conflict, or is it more widespread?  Do you feel the same way at the burial of a WW2 veteran as to a fallen veteran of Iraq?

I spent 14 years in uniform.  8 of those were active duty.  I have participated in 18 military funerals; a couple of them for friends lost in Iraq.  Most of them were for veterens of previous wars that died of more mundane causes.

The two conventions probably.

No more compromise...... if people dont respect what I think and my reasons for thinking them, then I will not do the same for them.
