So, I have a bit of a dilemma. I have about 130€ to spend on tech right now, and I'm thinking of either a dedicated folding machine with an E5200 and G31, or a new 500GB HD (Currently 160GB), and a Xonar DX (Currently Integrated, due to Vista).

I'm having trouble determining. I already ordered the folder, but it can be canceled.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Can someone explain what all this 'Folding' stuff is all about?

Why would you want a folding machine? It's one thing to use unused cycles for it, but a bit useless to have a dedicated machine for it.

Folding is fun. I find folding at least as enjoyable as playing games.

Wait ... what? Watching a CMD window say "Writing local files" and "Completed 50000 out of 250000 steps <20 percent>" is more fun?

Knowing that you're actually doing some good, the competition, and the setting up and maximizing performance is what's so appealing. I enjoy myself tinkering with my hardware WAY more than I do playing games.

Why would you get a sound card if you don't play games too often?  I play games everyday and I don't even have a sound card, I think that is a dumb way to spend money.  And you answered your own question.... you think folding is more fun than games.  So get the folder.

This integrated sound card is nowhere near competent enough to fuel my audio system. I listen to music a lot, and watch movies a lot, along with the occasional round of BF2 or Half-Life release. This sound card doesn't even let me choose my own equalizer settings, which is inexcusable, let alone support EAX.

And again, to you guys bitching about folding being useless/waste of parts/gay, it's a hobby, a competition, and a good thing to do.

Not bitching about how folding is stupid, etc., just saying that spending about 400 dollars on a computer for the sole purpose of folding is a waste of money, especially when you don't have a job. I think the idea is great, and if you can fold while just browsing the web then it could do a lot of good work.

Alright replace 400 with 200 its still a good amount of cash especially if you don't have a job.
