@ Usmarine: I don't really know many people or associate with many people that would get in a big hissy-fit if you asked them what the "big deal about football" was. Sure we have a large number of hardcore football fans but it's just a sub-culture that America also has its own variations of; the boozy baseball fan that fights in the stands, the hardcore "Woo! Go Red Sox!" patrons- you know the sort .

There's nothing wrong with not giving a shit about St.Georges day or a peice of cloth. If you think that's wrong, maybe there's something actually wrong with you.
The flag is a symbol, meaning that in and of itself, it's unimportant but it represents an important idea, in the flag's case a nation. However, that doesn't change the fact that the flag itself has no actual value or importance, it is what it is, a piece of cloth. Discarding a flag is not the same as discarding what the symbol represents, as you cannot discard a nation, which is an abstract, man-made idea.

Its just a flag, who cares? A flag is only a symbol, anyone who holds a symbol higher than what it represents is dumb.

It's fine if you believe that a flag is just a piece of cloth, but to call it inane and irrational to hold one in high regards is ridiculous. To some, there is more to a flag than the just the cloth and the colours, it's called sentimental value. Is it irrational to hold a broken pocketwatch passed down the family has an heirloom in high regard? I mean, it's broken, and it's just an old watch right? Basically, if you hold a different degree of respect for an object, it's really no reason to belittle others who obviously feel differently.

Before McCain speaks today, veterans will haul these garbage bags filled with flags out onto the stage — with dramatic effect, no doubt — and tell the story.
