@ Usmarine: I don't really know many people or associate with many people that would get in a big hissy-fit if you asked them what the "big deal about football" was. Sure we have a large number of hardcore football fans but it's just a sub-culture that America also has its own variations of; the boozy baseball fan that fights in the stands, the hardcore "Woo! Go Red Sox!" patrons- you know the sort .

@ MOAB: I don't know who you hang around with but it's clearly the wrong people! Here on St.Georges day we have a nice party and a good 'ole drink of Pimms! Your social group / neighbourhood needs to brighten up a little with the patriotism!

There's nothing wrong with not giving a shit about St.Georges day or a peice of cloth. If you think that's wrong, maybe there's something actually wrong with you.

The flag is a symbol, meaning that in and of itself, it's unimportant but it represents an important idea, in the flag's case a nation. However, that doesn't change the fact that the flag itself has no actual value or importance, it is what it is, a piece of cloth. Discarding a flag is not the same as discarding what the symbol represents, as you cannot discard a nation, which is an abstract, man-made idea.

Its just a flag, who cares? A flag is only a symbol, anyone who holds a symbol higher than what it represents is dumb.

So in essence, trashing and burning flags are an act of respect for what it represents than saluting or "saving" them.

It's fine if you believe that a flag is just a piece of cloth, but to call it inane and irrational to hold one in high regards is ridiculous. To some, there is more to a flag than the just the cloth and the colours, it's called sentimental value. Is it irrational to hold a broken pocketwatch passed down the family has an heirloom in high regard? I mean, it's broken, and it's just an old watch right? Basically, if you hold a different degree of respect for an object, it's really no reason to belittle others who obviously feel differently.

But I guess it's my fault I'm not as rational as all of you are.

Did you not read the posts questioning the authenticity of those updates? That perhaps, just perhaps, it was spin by the DNC so they didn't look like complete douchebags?

oh i am sorry.  i will just go around saying the US sucks.

so here is a question for you guys.

back a while ago a US soldier got in trouble for doing nasty things to the koran.  a lot of you were pissed and started bashing the US as usual with the usual and typical bf2s lines.  but, its only a book.  whats the problem?  why were a lot of you pissed at that since it is only a book?  paper and glue.

I wasn't pissed off at that, Infact I had some......different views on that one.

And FEOS, when it comes to elections. There can be spin from any side, it could be some Red Spin as much as it is some Blue spin

To play the devil's advocate, I think there's a massive difference between how you handle your own symbols, and how you handle the symbols of others. Discarding surplus flags is a far cry from deliberately attacking the values of a country that you're a guest in.

The difference is we wouldn't on US soil use the American flag for target practise.  Not in our wildest dreams.  Even though its still a piece of cloth.  Rather we would respect cultural rules and the law one has to abide when one is a guest in a foreign nation.

DUN DUN DUN NEWFLASH!

Throwing some extra flags away because you have no use for them or whatever is one thing. Intentionally doing "nasty things" to them is another. There's a symbolism when you burn a flag for example (not that I have any particular problem with the latter).

At the very least, they were an investment that could have been re-used at rallies in Colorado as well as the rest of the nation during the general election

No worries though:
This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Before McCain speaks today, veterans will haul these garbage bags filled with flags out onto the stage — with dramatic effect, no doubt — and tell the story.
Someone found a use for them. Absolutely owned tbh.

If you want to know how to properly dispose of the flag check the US flag code. Or contact http://www.legion.org/ or http://www.vfw.org/ and they can help you .

No one suggested here that it was a “nefarious plot”. I hardly think that Obama would have directed his staff to throw 12,000 American flags in a dumpster.  In fact, until Team Obama issued this ludicrous statement, the story didn’t have anything to do with them.

Would be better if they produced less flags and spent the money saved on thier veterans rather than the other way around ... why would they need such a surplus of flags anyway, each contender of both conventions must surely have their own private flags to take with them ?

I can't find the proper procedure of disposal on that code, care to help me?
