save your money.
im sure with al the random PC shit you have hanging around you could make a few rigs able to do some folding.

I could probably make five gaming PCs too, but they'd be so slow that it isn't worth it.FatherTed wrote:

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

So anything you do with them would be more worthwhile than they are atm.

I have all the parts I can use with a reasonable noise level in service.FatherTed wrote:

Why waste your money on something that will not benefit you directly? You may feel good but you don't work, and you don't have tonnes of cash lying around. Spend it on something that will benefit you. And if you still want to help with the folding thing leave your PC on overnight doing those calculations.
Or ya know, just give it to charity.
Something that will actually benefit people, like jord saidjord wrote:

What you people don't get, is that I enjoy building systems like this. I enjoy just tinkering with computers and electronics, making them perform as good as humanly possible. One system can keep me occupied for a month, squeezing every last MHz and dB out of it. Sure, I could spend it on adding things to my gaming rig, but apart from the HD and sound card in question, I really don't need to add any more to it. I won't get a better video card for 130€, I don't need more RAM, and a new CPU wouldn't be any faster.Mutantsteak wrote:

I don't just fold because it's a good thing to do, that occupies about 50% of it. The other 50% is the joy of assembling, optimizing and organizing the hardware, coming up with cunning solutions to problems, and simply making it all run smoothly. It's like other guys tinker with their cars, home theaters, guns and what not.
On the charity note, it's just a plain no. Sure, the Red Cross and others feed "starving african children", but in the long run, they're just making those countries more helplessly dependent on outside support. And to "Something that will actually benefit people", I just reply with a simple and plain: Fuck you Read up.
EDIT: It didn't look that TL;DR in the editor

Not gonna fold any better, so it wouldn't warrant an upgrade, as my 3870 does everything I want it to, graphically.DeathUnlimited wrote:

Plus, the budget is 130€ shipped.

Dude, save your money.
If you enjoy tinkering with the machines, then take all of those components lying around and build a folding machine from them. Then make that machine run beautifully and call it a day. Best part? You're €130 richer and you can use it on something else.
Honestly, though, I think you need to unplug for a while. Go on a vacation somewhere where there IS no computer. Head into the Finnish wilderness for like a week and enjoy yourself.

Thing is, the machines I have lying around will perform 1/10th of what a 130€ machine will.CapnNismo wrote:

like you said you care more about tinkering with them, you can "tinker" just as well with some POS, and it's still folding anyway

No matter what, I talked to DU, and he found a cheap 8800GT, that I'm getting instead. Might just as well close this drama-induced thread now.

Make a folding machine out of the best parts you have lying around, overclock it as best as you can. And use any money left over from your GT to buy something for it.
If I knew how much it would be to ship my PC over I would so you could play around with my PC.
