I have a printer attached to my XP computer (Professional), which is connected wirelessly to my network. How do I set it up so that my Vista computer can print from this printer, too? It is attached to the network with a wire. I tried using basic printer sharing once, but it didn't seem to work.

Cheap network map, if it helps.

You know, I had so many problems trying to successfully network together a bunch of Vista and XP machines that I just upgraded them all to Vista. Now running flawlessly sharing printer, scanner, photocopier, 3 desktops and a laptop with both wired and wireless connections. Vista's home networking seems far more intuitive than XP's... and I truly feel sorry for anyone trying to network Vista and XP onto the same workgroup .

if the printer is connected directly to the XP machine, make sure you enable "file and print sharing" in the firewall of the xp box.  once you do that, just share the printer, make sure all your machines are in the same workgroup, and you should be able to go to \\xpbox from the run line and see the shared printer.

Yeah, same work group is the biggest... Also make sure you have no other firewall blocking, when I set it up for my parents Norton was being a bitch...

You will also have to add a new printer on the machine that is trying to print over the network IIRC, and there is some option for setting it to know its a networked printer... then you will have to install the drivers for the print and it should work...

If you still have troubles with it, and want some one who has done it to work through with you step by step add me on xfire, same name as here.

Vista cannot use XP drivers, which is all the XP machine will serve if you attempt to connect to it.

Step 1:
Install the printer locally on the Vista machine

Step 2:
Reattach printer to XP machine

Step 3:
Install network printer, point to XP machine

Step 4:
Change printer's idle message

I didn't have to do this...

It worked perfectly, although you guys did forget to mention that you also need to check the enable sharing option in printer properties. Thanks for the help, anyways. You made it much easier than it would have been.

lol, I guess we figured having to turn on printer sharing when you want to turn on printer sharing would be obvious

Good to hear you got it working though, its nice not to have to transfer files to print it... and I still get a kick out of printing wirelessly from my laptop... (I am amused easy)

I get my biggest kick in working on my MacTop from my couch,

I surf the web in Firefox on the Mac,
I Remote Desktop into my computer and MSN(The PC version has more features)
And I use the Terminal to SSH into my Server and do tweaks.

All at the same time
Oh, and all while sitting in front of the TV

I get very little done.
