New rig suggestions

Yeah so I really want to build a new rig for when I get home. Firstly, I've been out of touch with new tech for about 8 months so I'm totally lost with the new standards. Secondly, I'm working at least 60 hours a week right now and I'm on location in Pipestone, MN (po-dunkville/BFE) so I don't have the time or steady 1nt3rWebZ to look up all the good stuff so I'm hoping some of you would be nice enough to list your opinions/suggestions on what to use.

I would like to keep it around $1,000 USD but again, I'm out of touch so maybe that's not realistic?

The main use will be gaming but will also be used for some video editing.

Only thing I've been able to research a little is video cards and I'm leaning towards the ATi HD 4870.

Yeah, a brand new DVD burner is around $4 more than that open box.
