So heres the story;

Couple of nights ago, I want to go to bed without my glowing mothership of a computer on, so I shut it down. Note that it is working perfectly at this moment, I merely shut it down via windows.

The next day, I go to turn it on. It starts up for about 30s, then shuts off. No warning, no beeps, just shuts down. It never even made it all the way though windows start up.

I try to start it again, same story. The next time, I start it up and immediately jump out of start up to boot it in safe mode. Then I notice none of my USB ports are working cuz my keyboard and mouse are completely dead. Then my comp shuts down again.

I boot again, go to bios to try booting from disk, but never even get there.

WTF is going on.

SPECS:

A-DATA 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Memory

APEVIA ATX-CW500WP4 500W ATX Power Supply

Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

nVidia 7600gs Video Card

All fans are working, so I don't think it is overheating.

The only thing I could think of is the power supply. I really hope not thought. That would be a seriously bitch.

I think it's the PSU.  How long have you had it for?

A PSU shouldn't be dieing after that amount of time, but that's not to say it's impossible.

Quickest thing to try, if you have one on hand, is swapping it out for another and giving it a shot.

yeah, you never know though, especially if the PSU is feom a company that specializes in cases.

*sigh* I was hoping to avoid that...

Anything else it might be?

See if you can find a friend with a PSU tester.

Check if the motherboard has any leaking capacitors

I checked for leaking caps, nothing.

An interesting update:

I tried starting it up one last time before gutting it. Lo and behold, it started, loaded windows and everything. I checked the temp just to make sure it wasn't frying itself and everything checked out.

As a test, I started up a game of Sins of a Solar Empire (good game, btw). A few seconds in, it died again. Now I'm back to square one.

Would a failing psu allow it to function that far? Or is this something else?

Yes it's likely, as when you started Solar Empire, your system started taxin the PSU. Causing it to fail like is has been.
