i want to buy a cheap pc to 'make my mistakes' on.

i would like to use it alongside my existing pc via a kvm switch. thing is i'm worried about USB compatibility, as the money i want to spend means the systems i'm looking at are quite old.

if i bought a USB1.1 system could i upgrade to USB2.0 by installing a PCI expansion card? or isn't it that simple?

It is that simple. Install a PCI USB 2.0 card and its ports will work at full speed. The ones in your mobo will however stay at 1.1 speeds

While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Unless you are planning on spending <$100, I don't think a "learning" pc is as necessary as you may think. It really isn't that hard, and especially if you can get a tech savvy friend to help you out on the first go then I bet you could go straight to building at least a half decent pc. Even if you can't get someone to help, just reading guides and stuff on the internet would most likely get you there, and you can always find someone willing to help you out if you have a problem.

well i have done my own upgrades/rebuilds, it's more for compTIA as i want a PC to pull it apart & try different things. fortunately i've just found one on ebay with a P4 gigabyte board which supports USB2.0. +1 for the advice.

i wouldn't break a sweat "trying different things" in my own rig, which cost me a lot.
