I'm not sure if this has been asked before, I don't have time to search because I'm at work, so sorry .
I'm starting college soon, and have a 2 hour commute there and back via train. Obviously I'm gonna listen to music on this journey, but my current mp3 player is completely fucked, and is shit anyway (IITRONICS 512mb). Can anyone reccommend a decent mp3 player that isn't gonna break, and can hold more than like 80 songs, give good quality (if thats controlled by the mp3 player lol, i dunno about these things), is easy to use and is like up to £100-£125 (cheaper is cool too, it's just gonna have to last through everyday use for 2 years). A couple of friends have bought Zen mp3 players, but other than the name, I don't know much about them. So yeh, any reccomendations would be cool Also, I don't want an Ipod, because I'm lazy and really can't be bothered with iTunes etc etc.
Thanks

San Disk have lately been building some good and sturdy mp3 players. From what I hear, the e200 series works nicely. Samsung z5 is also apparently good

At one point it deleted 30 GB of my music, so I'd say it definately is.

I'm using a 3 or 4 year old Cowon iAudio X5 with 30GB HD. The sound quality of that thing is superb, it supports drag&drop and you can even watch videos with it. If you can get your hands on one (pretty old, I don't think they produce it anymore) get it!

wat?

I always dragged and dropped when I used iTunes

I don't like iTunes though, because it:
- doesn't supports a lot of file types (doesn't support flac )
          - lol @ movie file support
- hates Vista x64 in every way possible
- is slow

WinAmp ftw.

Sansa makes (At least a couple of years-a year ago) superb players. Mate has got a 4GB (I think), with custom firmware, and that thing has the most amazing sound quality I've ever heard in a mobile device. They're fairly cheap, too, he got it for 150€ back then.

I'd provide more details, but I can't remember anything about it, sorry. Might ask him.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Cheers for the reccomendations guys, Karma for all. Freezer, if you do find more about that could you tell me please

And yeh, I just use Ares, which i just Locate File > Select File > Drag and drop. Having to drag it all into Itunes to convert it all to put it on an ipod is a pain in the arse.

I hate all the extra shit that comes with iTunes. But I much prefer the interface to anything else I've used so far so I'm stuck with it. I also <3 the music organising that it does for me.

Every time one of these threads come around, it's usually Zen/iPod. It's nice to see some others are represented.

As I usually do the same, my contribution for your consideration is the Cowon D2.

I like it primarily for the codec support and it's UMP interface. You can run it through Winamp, WMP, Mediamonkey and whatever else that uses UMP or you can plug it in like a flash drive and just copy everything over to the music folder.

As far as sound quality goes, it can run a little thin/weak with canalphones. It touts it's strong audio driver, which makes it work well with full size headphones. I find this ironic since a tiny, flash player should be about portability. Either way, it has a massive amount of audio tweaking abilities and an 5 band custom EQ, and you can choose from three preset frequencies for each band. Point being, you can make it sound good with anything.

I don't have any qualms with it, but there are some things to consider. To get video to work without using the included software, which is perfectly fine but when it comes to hardware I ignore the included software, I had to convert stuff to DivX at the exact screen resolution of the device. I don't watch video on it much and it would hurt to do so anyways, the screen size doesn't lend well to video.

What is more likely to effect you is the screen size and touch interface. I have thin fingers and the dexterity from too much gaming so I don't have a problem with it, but a lot of people do. As a test, get the dimensions and try to make a mock version from a picture of the screen. If that works, then so should the actual thing.

Through my experience the device is very sturdy, I've had it since April this year and there is naught but a few tiny scratches on the back. This is from daily use in my pocket alongside keys and whatnot.

I have the 8GB version, though a 16GB version just came out for just a bit more, both should be in your price range. The 16GB is $209 on Newegg, so about £120.

Mini review over.

It uses the standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

Not sure what you mean by the 'fucked up one.' The only other major ones are 2.5mm and 1/4 inch. The 2.5mm is for a phone headset, and the 1/4 inch is not often used in MP3 players... it would take up a lot of space, to say the least.

iTunes is a nice program imo.  Supports basically all the file types you will ever download, and is as simple as dragging and dropping a song to add it to the library.  And if you have at least a gig of RAM, there is no way it is slowing down  you're computer, unless you're running a PIII

The newer sony walkman's are drag and drop. Sound quality is far better than ipod's too imo.

I've had a 5G iPod Video (30GB) since October 2006 and that thing has yet to let me down once.

I got iTunes a month before I got it to see if I could stand to use the program (everyone trashed it and said it was shit) but I actually didn't mind it. I went through every one of my songs and changed the file tags on them, too. I could have left them alone and the iPod wouldn't have given a damn, but I am a stickler for detail and organization.

I don't listen to songs in FLAC (takes up too much file room) and it's not my primary video player (VLC for that). The only videos in the library for the program are my videos that I've converted over to iPod format for when I am on an airplane.

I do use it as my primary mp3 player on my computer, though, and I don't find it slow at all. 1.6 GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB RAM.

So if you want a video mp3 player for when you go flying or long trips, something that IS durable and reliable, I would recommend the iPod Classic. The new software on those is pretty slick, too. Kinda wish I had one, but only for the software. Does the same job as my 5G just as well. The sound quality is also really good with my Sennheiser EH-150 headphones. I could buy some good in-ear headphones, but over-the-ear headphones just sound so damned good and the sound isolation is excellent and they're not even sound cancellation headphones.

I have a Creative Zen 16GB Video MP3 player and I haven't had a single problem with it. The batteries last for a long time, I use it while driving and in school, I probably charge it once a week and a half to two weeks. The sound quality is awesome too, that was the reason for me getting the Zen, Creative is known for their sound cards, and of course they have a nice one in this MP3 Player.

You can actually get the 8GB version for $88 right now on Amazon if you act quickly before they change the price again:
