The N95 comes with GPS software installed.  Does that mean that I don't have to pay for the GPS service?  Or when it says software preinstalled, does it mean that I have to buy a subscription to use the software?

my educated guess is this:
to use the software is free.  the software is basically mapquest, it doesn't know where you or your car is, and you have to type in a starting address
but to get a full featured GPS you have to pay a fee, and then the program can tell you where you are and offer you voice navigation to where you want to go.

is that ^^^^^ right?

I believe that is right yes, and you need to pay for the bandwidth it uses.

I have this phone too it's good. Best thing you can do is download some other form of GPS software with the maps already loaded I would of suggested tom tom but it doesn't have maps for the U.S.A. You can download a hacked version of Nokia maps onto your pc. This lets you pre-load the maps for free. You then only have to pay for the GPS lock on which is about 2p.

I bought a Garmin 750 nuvi GPS and a sony k850i - I was going to get the N95.  I am happier with what I have if that helps you at all.

I use the FM broadcast on the GPS to play tunes in my car stereo which works very well, and the sony k850i has better battery life and is a very nice phone.  The controls do take getting used to though but after a week its fine.  I know the new sonys are out in the states c903 or whatever and I would have gotten that but not available in canada

So if I get an unlimited data plan (only $40 ), and acquire some GPS software other than the Nokia one, I will be able to use the GPS for free?

Yup you could still use the nokia maps though but it's gay because you still have to pay for the voice navigation.
