I've had a 5G iPod Video (30GB) since October 2006 and that thing has yet to let me down once.
I got iTunes a month before I got it to see if I could stand to use the program (everyone trashed it and said it was shit) but I actually didn't mind it. I went through every one of my songs and changed the file tags on them, too. I could have left them alone and the iPod wouldn't have given a damn, but I am a stickler for detail and organization.
I don't listen to songs in FLAC (takes up too much file room) and it's not my primary video player (VLC for that). The only videos in the library for the program are my videos that I've converted over to iPod format for when I am on an airplane.
I do use it as my primary mp3 player on my computer, though, and I don't find it slow at all. 1.6 GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB RAM.
So if you want a video mp3 player for when you go flying or long trips, something that IS durable and reliable, I would recommend the iPod Classic. The new software on those is pretty slick, too. Kinda wish I had one, but only for the software. Does the same job as my 5G just as well. The sound quality is also really good with my Sennheiser EH-150 headphones. I could buy some good in-ear headphones, but over-the-ear headphones just sound so damned good and the sound isolation is excellent and they're not even sound cancellation headphones.
In my experience decent in ear headphones have WAY better sound isolation because they are pretty close to being ear plugs...CapnNismo wrote:

I also find that my E2C's have better quality then my more expensive MDR-700s.
I vote ipod, not because of the player itself but as one of the highest sellers there are way more options and addons available. If nothing else the car stereo hookup is worth it... Sure most have an aux in, but being able to tuck it in the glove box and control it with the stereo its self is much better...
About the talk of sound quality... If you don't have expensive headphones don't worry about it. With the ipod you can hear the difference between the quality of headphones in the $100 range, so if you aren't spending that much the players sound quality will likely be higher then your headphones.
If itunes slows down your computer significantly... buy a new computer, yours is a piece of shit.
I use my phone way more then anything... If your phone can play MP3's buy a 4 or 8 gig SD card for it, much much more convenient imo, though the sound quality may suffer some.
Speaking of which, if anyone knows a USA online store that sells low end decent in ear cellphones with a 2.5mm plug PM me for Karmas. I am talking $20-$30 range... No adapters.
(sorry for thread jack, didn't think it warranted another one. )
I have an iPod Nano 2G, a Video 5.5G and an iPhone 3G. I would never buy any other MP3 players. Ever. Period.
If iTunes is shit on your PC, you seriously need to consider upgrading your computer. I run iTunes on a 6 year old iMac with no problems what so ever.
Look at the new 16Gb Nano's, which come in a many colors. Ships for 149 pounds. Video, cover flow, great user interface.
And honestly. There is a reason why Apple has 73,5% of the market. Not because they 'sell shitty mp3 players' like most haters would say, but because they sell a complete 'experience' (iTunes+iPod) which works.
