Would hooking my PC to my TV with an HDMI cable make a difference in quality than with an S-video cable?
HDMI carries sounds along with the video signal. S-Video is strictly video I think.
I'd say HDMI would be better quality.

SourceYou should use HDMI or DVI for best picture quality.
If you have a HD source, the picture you get from HDMI is stunning.
S video is old tech.

Is it an S-video to component? If so I think am right in saying that only goes as high as 1080i. Youd need the HDMI for the full 1080p and sound.
I don't think the HDMI will carry sound from the PC... since it goes straight to the video card, but thanks for the info, I'm going to pick one up and I'll let you know if it works better. I'm using S-video right now and I can barely read any of this shit
S-Video is kinda low tech, just one step above composite I think.
Go with HDMI.
Go with HDMI.
My old TV wasn't HD, but it had RCA in and S-video.
I originally hooked up my PC with RCA and it looked like CRAP.
I then hooked up my PC with S-Video, and it looked like crap (note the improvement of being spelled with lower case letters )
I may have been because a PC with a low enough resolution to be displayed in SD will look like crap reguardless, but the S-video input was very unimpressive.

HDMI does carry sound.OmniDeath wrote:

Most new video cards have onboard sound for HDMI.
I think his point wasn't that HDMI is incapable of carrying sound, just that if its coming straight from just the video card it wont be sending any...CrazeD wrote:

If most do thats pretty cool, but like you said most, so some aren't sending any sound... thats his point.
I'm using surround sound so it doesn't matter anyway.VicktorVauhn wrote:

Got an HDMI cable, looks great, especially for games! Text is still a little hard to read though...

correct me if I'm wrong.
HDMI>DVI because of the size of the connector. Quality is the same. Scart can actually carry about as good of a picture as component, if the cable, reciever and transmitter are high quality. S-video doesn' really have anything over omposite, except for another connector. They can both carry an ok-ish interlaced PAL/NTSC signal, but not much more.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
No, component > scart anytime. You don't understand, if colors are separate then it loses less quality signal when signal passes from source to final component. Same with s-video vs video composite just that the difference isn't as noticeable as when comparing component and scart.Freezer7Pro wrote:

I hate my HD to pc LCD the colors in it are all wrong
SCART can carry separate colour signals, if you didn't know. SCART can carry most signals, really, including S-video, component and composite. Even VGA in some cases. Plus, I didn't put SCART above component, I put it under, as it's slightly inferior, due to it being so sensitive to the conditions..Sup wrote:

SCART > S-Video
(though there are numerous versions of SCART and the lower end versions aren't as good)
