A friend of mine (that will go unnamed) is planning on buying a new PC, and he wants it to be very energy-efficient so that it doesn't give off a huge amount of heat. This is what he's come up with so far, and he wants to know if it will all be compatible:

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Publi … stTitle=My

E8500 3.16 GHz
Thermaltake Purepower 500W
Seagate Barracuda 500GB
ASUS 8600 GT 512MB
Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 667
ASUS P5K P35
Thermaltake Strike Midtower Case
LITE-ON 20x DVD Burner
Thermaltake A1280 120mm Case Fan
Vista Home Premium

He is mostly concerned with the DVD drive and is open for recommendations, but he would prefer to have only one drive.
My concern is the RAM. I know my mobo can't use RAM slower than 800 MHz, so I doubt 667 will work for his either. He doesn't want a top of the line computer, just one that handles games like BF2 and CoD4 fairly well. He'd also like to keep the price under $1000. If anyone could clarify about the RAM or has some suggestions, they'd be very helpful.

Replace the E8500 with an E5200, the 8600GT with this, and the RAM with this. Also get this.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

and get a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R instead of the P5K...

edit: and get Corsair 520HX power supply. the purepower sucks.

- E8500 gives pretty much nothing over an E8400.
- That PSU is not the best choice. A more future-proof, reliable, modular, and silent choice 520HX.
- SG Barracudas tend to run hot, and their warranties have shady points. For cooler, more silent and cheaper HD with good 3 year warranty SMG Spinpoint F1.
- 8600GT will stutter with CoD4 on all high. 9600GT will not.
- Kingston memory is not the best. OCZ Reaper is.
- P5K has it's issues. (The ASUS powered vdrop/droop and occasional crashy BIOS). The best P35 board in this case would be GA-P35-DS3L.
- That case is good, with the added 120mm casefan
- Any DVD-RW will do. They are only loud when reading/writing.

These make about $750 not counting the MIRs

If you really want to buy your OS, choose whichever you like. I wouldn't buy any. If the budget then allows, upgrade the GPU to HD4850 for future-proofness.

That's my picks.

I have played that game with my own 8600GT on my own computer. 20fps in creek. Even 8600GT SLI was not totally enough for it. By turning the AA to 2x it runs just fine, but with all high, no.

Don't think I missed anything. There's $200 left over for a monitor if he needs one though.

he seems to be most interested in your suggestions, DU.

Friend wrote:

Ask DU if his suggestions would make my PC overall more efficient than my current suggestions. I agree with the CPU and PSU, but I'm not sure about the mobo, GPU, and ram, as far as efficieny, especially mobo. My friend said that if the mobo isn't efficient than everything else will be less efficient.
