Installing Linux

For my programming class at university we need to use Linux for some of our programming applications. Right now I have to walk 15 minutes to get to the computer labs in order to use the linux computers (and it will be worse in the winter), so I was wondering if someone would give me a guide on how to install Linux from the very beginning to end? I know in order to do it, you need to partition your drives... I have 2 drives right now, 2x120GB with 80GB free on my D drive. So yeah, any help would be really appreciated (or even some useful tips on what to do).

Oh and burning a DVD isn't really an option for another couple weeks since I won't be home to do so until then.

I would start by doing it in a VM ...

Most distros now are not much different than installing windows.

One you have the VM, try downloading a distribution (such as Fedora) ISO, then mount it with the virtual dvd rom in your VM. This way you can try it over and over again without any physical consequence.

edit: you can do this with any distribution of Linux.

1. Go to Ubuntu.com
2. Click Download
3. Download the Desktop version
4. Burn teh ISO
5. Put it into your drive
6. Reboot
7. Live CD
8. Install shortcut on the desktop

Follow install wizard.

No you don't have to register to get it. VMWare server is unconditionally free.
