I've decided to holiday in the Balkans (Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro) this year. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on travel in the region, getting around, money, borders, places to avoid, scams, what to see/do, etc.

Places I'd like to visit include:

Split
Dubrovnik
Kotor
Mostar
Sarajevo
Belgrade

I intend to do two weeks of touring.

Its the same as before. There were more languages before and there are more languages now. Dubrovnik is nice.

Anyway did you get your old job back from netjets? I am thinking of leaving my firm anyway as i can earn more....but the fuckers are willing to pay for a 33,000 MBA in a year or two...but the work is boring me

From friends who visited, Croatia is a great place.

Also I have a friend who studied in Belgrade, but that was like 5 years ago or something? Don't remember exactly. Anyway, what stuck to my mind was that they even showered with bottled water because the NATO bombs had contaminated the water with all that depleted uranium etc. Shit is very cheap, lots of piracy hookers and booze if you know the right people. Generally be careful of the locals. But you've been around so you'll be fine.

Get your visas in order ahead of time, for starters.

Second, if traveling from one side of Croatia to the other through Bosnia, I've heard of folks running into issues. That's why I say make sure that your visas are in order (entrance and exit stuff).

Lots of Austrians go to Croatia and love the hell out of it. Shame I can't talk to my Serbian friends for you. Their German isn't quite up to par ...

Dubrovnik is really,really expensive,but also really beautiful place to visit.
Zagreb has some nice sites to see,prices are affordable,great night life.
I would suggest visiting Adriatic towns/places and Istra.

Only thing I could recommend you is that you try not to travel through Slovenia because you'll have to pay these so-called "vinjete".They cost around 30GBP and oyu must buy them if traveling through Slovenia.Or you'll pay a fine of 100-1000GBP.

Austria and Germany have them too I think. Vinjeta is a Slovenian word for a sticker that must be stickied on your car. In Croatian for example you need to stop in order to pay highway costs here you don't need to so it makes traveling faster.

I had the pleasure of doing a 6 month tour out in Bosnia. Bihac (Spelling???) was nice with a lot of attractive lasses. Just to let you know though. Don't piss any body off. 9 years after the war and we were still taking in large amounts of weapons!
We'd rock up to a village set up a trailer full of sandbags and then the locals would rock up and drop off the weapons they had. We would get Grenades, with or with out protection caps. Sub machine guns, rifles, AK varients, belt fed weapons, mortars, mines and anti tank weapons! This is the stuff they wanted to hand in!!!! Be careful of mine fields as well. There is a fair few of them still about.

I went to Zargreb in Croatia as well. That was not bad. Very busy and hectic. All Motorways are toll roads so there are hardly any traffic. Again be careful there are alot of weapons about. They do have a McDonalds though. Oh and as far as l'm aware, they have no minefileds.
