Yea, Sup was right about the highway fees. But it is only for the autobahn. Stay off the autobahn and you don't pay. But there are cheaper stickers you can buy, like metro cards.

I was going to go Turkey but the hotel got terrible reviews. 4 star as well. Personally I think it was just a bunch of rich uptight millionaires that there's no pleasing.

Going Spain now, 20 miles out of Barcelona.

Actually, with a lot of hotels in Turkey and Egypt and Tunesia (anything south of Europe), you have to be wary of the star rating. Best to just get 5 star and you're more often than not safe. My girlfriend and her friends could go on for hours about the hotels down there and how shitty even a 4 star can be (and I mean shitty, like dirty Amsterdam hostel shitty).

The best parties in Belgrade are on the river rafts. If it was his first time there and if he doesn't speak Serbo-Croat then its most likely he wont find good parties.

I've decided to holiday in the Balkans (Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro) this year. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on travel in the region, getting around, money, borders, places to avoid, scams, what to see/do, etc.

Places I'd like to visit include:

Split
Dubrovnik
Kotor
Mostar
Sarajevo
Belgrade

I intend to do two weeks of touring.
As far as Bosnia goes, money is Convertible Mark KM (about 2KMs = 1€) but everybody accepts Euro as well (stores, pubs, restaurants etc). We are not all that much in to trains so travel is done by buses. Im not sure if you need a visa to enter Bosnia (I doubt it) but Im sure you can google it.
Almost all foreigners I met that came to Bosnia were completely surprised. They expected gangs and shooting everywhere, para militias on the streets, Muslim fundamentalist with long beards walking around with bunch of wives following them and stuff like that.
Most interestingly, and I kid you not, a lot of people (specially Americans) expect a desert like environment and climate conditions.

But actually you will find that Sarajevo is not much different than other big European cities.

Also you will find that almost all younger people speak English quite good. We dont use voice dubbing on foreign programs (movies, TV shows etc), instead we use subtitles. And since most of the television programme is on English, everyone learns it eventually

And dont worry about mines. You have much bigger chance of slipping in the shower and dying, than stepping on a mine.

I dont think you are dumb enough to fall for any scams

If you get invited in someone's home take you shoes off.

Popular alcoholic beverage is home made "Rakija" - its colourless, very strong and very easy to drink. So be careful.

If you dont like very very VERY strong coffee than dont order "Bosnian Coffee" just order "coffee".

Make sure you eat a lot of "Cevapcici"

If you want to know something just ask. When are you planning on going?

Plus 1 to Zeidmann on the kickass post.

I'd love to visit Bosnia, too. Wouldn't mind going to Serbia, either, but I think I would be rather wary with an American passport in Belgrade. My Serbian friends say it's such a beautiful country, though. The whole Balkan area looks gorgeous.
