Ok, so im moving from a desktop to a laptop.
I want to be able to play pretty much any game on it, it needs to be fast, have hd and bluray capabilites, and generally be awesome.

The good news : I have a really high budget, looking at £ 2200-2500 ($3900-4500)

only need 500 GB hdd space, the rest I want as good as you can get.
When i look to get the highest specs from alienware, the price comes out at around £3300....which is way toooo much.
But from what I hear alienware stuff is overpriced.

I'm not that good at researching this kinda stuff, so if someone could get me the very best for my budget, that would be awesome, be it just buying direct, or getitng one custom built from a website (or find something cheaper but just as awesome from alienware)

Winner gets Karma!

If there's any more info you need, just ask here. Thanks in advanced.

I'm assuming you're from the UK.

If you're looking for the absolute best, look for the Clevo 900/901C. Has sone of the top graphics cards, utilises desktop processors, apparently runs fairly cool considering the hardware. Here in the states, its rebranded as Sager; I think in the UK, it's sold at Rock computers under the name Xtreme SL8. Unfortunately, Rock doesn't offer it with a single 500GB drive, it's all assortments of single, double, and triple drive configurations (although you can opt to have a non-RAID configuration even with multiple drives).

(Used their lower end configuration)
XSL8-Q9450 standard features:
Q9450 Quad core 2.66Ghz 12Mb,1333Mhz / 2 x Nvidia GeForce Go 9800M GT 512MB(Enables SLI ) / Hi-res 17" WUXGA X-Glass (1920x1200) / 2GB DDR2 800Mhz / 250GB 7200rpm SATA HDD / No RAID / 8x +/- Dual Layer DVD Writer / No TV Tuner / Windows Vista Home Premium / No thanks / No thanks / Roxio, BullGuard / Pixel Guarantee option not taken / Standard UK Keyboard / UK Power Lead

Upgraded items: 4GB RAM, 2x250GB 7200rpm HDD (you can choose whether or not you want RAID), Blu-ray ROM / +/- DVD Writer

Price including VAT: £2286.88

If you're put off by the lack of GTX of the GPU, the performance difference between the 8800m GTX and the 9800m GT is negligible in favour of the 9800m GT (apparently); from what I've read ~1-2 fps in Crysis.

Look at the other models too, because quite honestly, I think SLi and Quad Core processors are a bit overkill for notebooks, but that's just me (In the end, it's still your purchase so who am I to judge ).

And here's a review of essentially the same notebook, except with older specs and a different brand name.

I'd buy from the US and get it shipped over. For a build of this price I think you'd be able to get something much better for the same $

Thanks for the help! I was torn between the dell and the sl8, but am going with the sl8, simply because you can pack a little more in for the same price, and rock's customer service is just awesome....I had never even heard of rock before lol. thanks again.

sighface at 17" laptops. They're huge! I'd go with smaller.

I carry my 17'' to university every day, so does freezer. Unless you're a small weakling, you should be able to carry one. Working on a real keyboard+numpad with a big screen is much nicer and productive
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Btw, this is what I have gone for

Intel® Core™ 2 Quad processor Q9550 2.83Ghz 12Mb,1333Mhz

2 x Nvidia GeForce Go 9800M GT 512MB(Enables SLI ) / Hi-res 17" WUXGA X-Glass (1920x1200) / 2 x 2GB DDR2 800Mhz / 3 x 250GB 7200rpm SATA HDD / RAID 0  / Blu-ray ROM / +/- DVD Writer

Yeah scrap that, after a bit more research and dealing with rock, their customer service sucks, and by all accounts, they could go bankrupt soon, on top of that the order was estimated to ship in 18 weeks lol....so cancelled that.

Dell, not enough options in the build, and pricey for what was on offer.

That means, I have reluctantly just placed my order with alienware, pretty much max'ed out the area51-m17x......the buy now pay within 12 months option sealed the deal.

As do I.... If you cant manage carrying one your a bitch.

Besides... how small do you expect a hardcore gaming laptop to be?
