erm...no.  but i had to call in air strikes danger close.  you want to trivialize that stress and seeing a jet coming close to you and dropping bombs as simple.

in all honesty calling in air strikes doesn't take much skill.  If you had fought them mano a mano rather than pussying out and calling in air support then we would have something to debate about.

I'm sure you've got plenty of flight time logged over combat zones as well. Tell us, from your wealth of knowledge and personal experience just what it's like to fly into hostile air space...

What, your not qualified to?

I guess then you don't know the first thing about air strikes since you've never been in the pilot seat during one.

In fact, other than giving co-ordinates from a map, there wouldn't be much else you would know about air strikes then is there?

I served 8 years military and I believe I have little to no better knowledge than someone sitting at their computer reading about a conflict.  Thats because I never saw combat and have no idea of the possible chaos that surrounds any gunfight, bombing, or similar event.

Out of respect for my lack of knoweldge about the situations, I keep my opinion to myself.

If a conversation comes about that involves ssbn's I will spout off till the cows come home.

I'm no military man but I'd imagine some of these things would have to happen for an airstrike:

1) Request close air support from your commander

2) Commander requests close air support

3) CAS is granted

4) Coordinates are sent to commander

5) Coordinates are cross-checked with maps and such

6) Plane has to get there

7) Plane has to get authorization for weapons launch

8) Depending on the guidance system it could be very accurate (GPS or laser guided) or it could rely on the skill of the pilot and environmental factors

And remember, during all of that, you're probably receiving lots of gunfire.

Pfffft, usmarine, even I can use a telephone and say: "Hey, I need some bombs over here.  Send a plane or something."

Doing it under fire is just a minor hiccup.

well i expect you've got to cower somewhere while relaying co-ordinates to the relevant people.  Unless you openly walked around in the middle of a gunfight?

Man you're 'ard.

I know we had that conversation many moons ago.  We missed each other by a couple months if I remember right.  USS Florida, SWFPAC REB, TLAM-N, VMPB 1+2.

Marine you know nothing about SWFPAC you weren't even on a SSBN,  Aussiereaper knows just as much as you do about those things.
