what kind is it?


(like, does it have slots for expansion cards, built in modem, etc.)

Step 1. Check what IO ports it has.
Step 2. After you've found that it does have ethernet, plug the cable in.
Step 3. Tell us what OS it is running.

oh yeah it's died now, but keep the suggestions coming til i find the power cable.

Make sure your ethernet is turned on and stuff (not disabled in device manager or something). Go into network connections and check everything looks ok.

it was turned on (max walked me through that bit)

by "looks ok", what exactly should i be looking for?

DHCP IP address, for a start.

If you can ping your router, that's always good.

always thought you needed a space, (ipconfig /all)

hmm... guess im too proper with my ipconfig /all and cd C:\

Anyways ted, post your ipconfig/all (or ipconfig /all) and we can have a look. Top tip, run ipconfig /all >C:\ipconfig.txt

In the mean time, trying these cant hurt:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
