Is it abd to leave your computer on overnight?
Somepeople never turn them off.
Some geriatric technocrats suggest it's better to leave it on so that you don't wear out your hard drive by booting it all the time. But that's not really an issue anymore.
Leaving your computer on overnight for no reason is environmental vandalism.

well also think how runnin 400watts 24/7 does to your energy cost every month...
Nature is a powerful force. Those who seek to subdue nature, never do so permanently.
Looking at all the diseases, disasters and problems the environment has caused for man you still want to coddle it?cospengle wrote:

If the environment had its way it would kill you and everyone you love. This shit is war.
My dad, not a huge techy, but does work with computers for a living, used to refuse to shut down his computer... He said that most errors and problems you will have come at start up when everything has to be reloaded, so I guess he just tried to avoid that as much as possible.
I used to leave mine on all the time, the only reason I don't anymore is it keeps my room to fucking hot.
I think if you leave it on too long (days/weeks/months) it will start to slow down, or have problems... but rebooting and clearing everything out will fix that

It's good if you fold on it *subtle hint at the fah team*
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

My state was founded by Batman. Your opinion is invalid.
I somehow doubt his computer uses 400W when idle... Dual GX2s and a QX9650 uses just about 500 idle.Im_Dooomed wrote:

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
Quadcore + HD4870X2 system uses about 450W under full load. For reference. A regular c2d + say, 8800GT system might take 100-150W on idle.Im_Dooomed wrote:

My x2 4800+ @ 3.2GHz and 4x overclocked 8800GT with loads of hard disks and an inefficient PSU uses 440W under load.

Mine shuts off when the power goes out, that's it.
Occasional restart when needed. Stays on otherwise.

I leave it on when it's downloading, it automaticly shuts down when finished. But most of the time I just shut it down when I'm not using it.

I'm pretty much always either Downloading or Seeding something, so it's a godsend when I get that one night a week when all my torrents are done and I don't have "Ultrasilent" fans (As the case brochure stated) buzzing beside my head.
And I reboot every couple days because Torrents + Vista + DD-WRT = Gayness, I lose all network traffic if I don't reboot.

I leave my computer on 24/7 for a) torrents b) folding@home and c) politics. Someone has gotta take a stand against those damn tree huggers.
It's on pretty much all day every day. But I put it on standby at night (unless downloading). That's proper standby: No fans or disks spinning, just a green blinking LED on the front.

Up as much as I'm downloading, or couldn't be bothered to turn it off.
It's noisy as hell though ¬_¬
Just turn off all the lights, and roll over with duvet on head.
Sorted.

I reboot about twice a week though.
The 2nd computer uptime is 4 weeks atm.
