I just signed up for cable internet and I also order a wireless access point and they are coming to install it today.

My question is will the cable guy need to get onto my computer to set it up or can he just set everything up and then let me hook the cables to my computer when I get off work?

My computer is not setup yet and even if it was I do not want some guy touching it and installing stuff I dont need or want.

Depends:

- If you asked them to set your wireless network up for you, or not.
- If your PC has a wireless network card installed already, or not.

Then I assume you will be connecting to your network via a cable?

In which case, they will not need to touch your computer.

Yeah my main computer will be wired but I will have a wireless base station attached to the modem so I can broadcast the signal to my laptops.

I dont want the guy touching or installing anything on my main system.

why?

Afraid he's gonna find your secret porn stash?

You can always tell them you can install it yourself, but why not let them do it?

You're quite paranoid.  If you know what you're doing then there is no reason for the tech to touch your PC.  However, if you're a novice at setting those things up, you might have to bite the bullet and let the guy set you up.

I am quite paranoid yes thanx for noticing

I have been using, building and repairing computers for over 10 years but I have never had a wireless base station before.

Then he has no reason to touch your computer.  Just let him know you know what to do and he will give you the equipment.

what will be involved with setting up a wireless base station?

my main system will have a wired connection to a cable modem but will also be attached to the wireless base.

That seems a strange way to do it. You're better off connecting your modem to the access point. That way you can (more easily) share the internet connection.

Anyhow, you said people are installing it for you - so let them do it.

Why are you doing that?  Normally, when you have an AP, you have a regular cable modem or router that otherwise doesn't have wifi and then you set the AP for your wireless devices.  Setting up your network specially for a computer that only has one connection doesn't seem logical, unless you have things such as PS3 or 360 that will be using the wireless.  Or simply get a wireless router.

It sounds like a wireless router would be the simpler way to go.
