friend just got a 4850 today after his old card crapped out. Anywho, he updated drivers etc, the usual. Well knowing about the Hotfix, he installed it, well, we couldn't figure out how to get hotfix to change his fan speed.

He clicked on something (to install) what he thought was a program he already had to adjust his fan speed, after he installed said program, he clicked "finish' and his computer promptly shut down. He got a message about disk boot failure. He's been trying to get back into safe mode but can't. Any suggestions?

We're kind of at a loss as to why it's not allowing him at least to be able to boot into safe mode. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I heard that just using Rivatuner to up the fan speed worked. Try that?

He can't even get back into windows to try it. Can't even get back to safe mode to do a sys restore.

He can actually get to his reg desktop and then it shuts down again.

chkdsk.

Don't ask, it fixes all.

chkdsk /r

The /r stands for "Rrrr! Go you piece of shit".

If that doesn't work, Repair install of Windows.

Giving up for the night, too late to try a repair. Thanks Cheez for the help, he'll try the chkdsk /r tomorrow and see if it works. If not, I guess he's looking at a reformat.

Will check the boards tomorrow night for any additional suggestions.

this is some crazy bullshit. I suggested he take out the new card, 4850, tried rebooting without the card in, shut down, put it back in, and was able to get into safe mode, did a restore point and all seems well at the moment. Took about 5 minutes after 2 hours of trying to get it figured out. Simple fix? WTH?

Modern Technology, ftl.

Will keep advised as to how it pans out. But so far so good.

Thanks again Cheez for your assistance. Mamba308 says thanks for your help too.

Cheez, thanks again for your help, Mamba308's system seems to be back up and running. Don't know what the hell happened, but then again, does anyone know when it comes to computers?

You've got four posts in a row. The last one could be fine for the bump, but the first 3 would have done just fine with an edit..

You are correct sir, I was trying to update his progress as time went along, wasn't meant to bump the thread. But alas, I didn't think of just editing the single post, my apologies. Good thing I don't get paid to think
