Hi all,

I was having a lot of graphic lag and followed some of the guides on tweaking the system and BF2 to get optimum performance. I've defragued the disk and the pagefile and it would be fine for a while. but after a day or so, I would have the same problem again.

All my friends kept telling me that I would need a new Graphics card, so I got a X700 and even after that, I didn't noticed any difference the in the graphic lag problem.

Then they started saying I needed more RAM (I only have 1Gb). So then I started to make the math and after noticing that after defraguing the pagefile the performance would improve a lot, I did the following:

1. Control Panel>System
2. Advanced Tab>Performance Settings
3. Advanced Tab again>Set memory Usage to Programs
4. Clicked the "Change" button on Virtual memory>Checked "No Paging File">Clicked "Set"
5. Clicked Ok>Clicked OK and restarted my computer

Voila, Problem solved.

I'm not sure if this is going to solve your graphics breaks and lag problem, it did for me. Also, running the computer without a pagefile might not be the best way of running other applications, but for playing BF2 works.

I've only had the opportunity of playing twice with this setup, but till now is running fine. Hope it works well for you guys too.

Agreed. I run an Asus P5WD2/Pentium D 830/X850XT PE 256MB PCI express x16 with 2 Gigs of Corsair PC2 6400 memory, and I run with no page file. Works like a charm. My maps load very fast and I am often one of the people first to spawn on map changes.

I didn't get it working on properly.

I always have page memory, don't remember how much got Pentium D with X800XL and all works fine ( with 2 G of RAM )

Remember I only advise this to ppl that only have 1 Gb and that are having Graphic lag problem. I also noticed that SF does not like this very much. I can run it for a while, but after loading 2 or 3 maps it crashes to the desktop.

Yeah, some programs doesn't like you not having a pagefile because Windows is telling them you have (or something like that )

Besides, having/not having a pagefile shouldn't amount to much unless your HD is fairly slow should it?

Be carefull doing this. now my computer Crashes to desk to on BF2 start up, never did this before. Re set it back... still crash to desk top. Now what. all I wanted was a better frame rate, n less lagg so I could fly more often on more servers. boo hooo.

Dudes, as an IT bod I wouldn't advise doing this...

The page file is space on the Hard Drive that windows will use as virtual memory if you do not have enough physical memory in your PC. So if you have 512Mb and BF2 needs 1.3Gb, windows will use 800Mb of the page file to load the entire program into "memory". Programs need to swap code in and out of memory all the time and whilst this is quite fast in RAM it is a lot slower on your Hard Drive.

I would leave the page file alone and buy an extra Gb of memory.

I increased my physical memory from 1Gb to 2Gb and the diference in performance is amazing - no lag and maps load a lot faster. I'm usually among the first people to start a round (good for vehicle whoring :^)

i used to have 768 MB of RAM, but i just got a 1GB stick so i replaced that with the 256 stick so i have a total of 1.5GB now, and nothing in BF2 is faster for me. the only thing that is faster is minimizing.

I also noticed that With 1Gb, when I Quit BF2 my PC would hang and play the music for 30 seconds or so.
Doesn't do it anymore  :^ )   

Perhaps "amazing" was a bit of an exageration... how about "noticable" ?

yeah mine doesnt sit around anymore either since hte upgrade. but in game, nothing all has changed. still the really long load times and lag in certain maps.

I have 1 GB of ram and have ZERO lag in game, with everything on high (except textures). Then again its 1 GB of DDR500 Mushkin Redline @ 2-2-2-6

i got 1 GB of ram also and a gfore 6600 and their is not one lag except when i close out the game it might take a while but who the hell really cares?

Also, one thing that I had to do is terminate any program that I don't need on the task manager. This will make sure that I will have enough RAM to run BF2. It worked for me and I hoped it is helpfull for some of you guys.

Like i said before, this setup is not recommended for other applications.

For optimal performance memory needs to be the same type, size, and make.

Having a mixture of memory sticks doesn't help much.

I have 1GB and I've recently tweaked my gaming install by disabling any services that are not neccessary, using this guide and I'm amazed at how much of a difference it's made - not only does XP startup quicker, BF2 loads quicker, maps load quicker, it verifies in like half the time it used to and gameplay is noticably smoother and less laggy. I also, previously, disabled just about startup applications.

One word of warning - doing this is not for the amature - disable the wrong services and/or startup apps can cause XP to be become totally unusable. Having said that, follow a good guide (like the one I linked to above) and be carefull about what you're doing and you won't regret it.

Oh, also, as Prelsidente says, doing these kind of tweaks is not recommended for general applications. This is one of the reasons I use multiboot (have mutliple XP installs) so that I can tailor each to the job it's intended for.

Anyone else try this?  I've always thought that with 1 gig of ram you really should not be using any virtual memory, so I went ahead and set my virtual memory down to 5mb (just incase of BSOD).  BF2 runs GREAT, but SF crashes to the desktop after 15 to 45 minutes of play.  One of the crashes even gave me what looked like a "bad memory" error.  I know it's not my memory, but I think I'll pick up another 1 gig stick anyhow.  I need my SF to work.

I totally agree with Scorpion0x17 about disabling all the "junk" XP loads, but I find it amazing that simply killing the "swap disk" (virtual memory) makes the game run the way it should.  Reminds me of the old dos/windows days where you had to jump through hoops and create different book disks that use as little of your 640k base memory in order to get games to play.

this generally isnt a good idea. setting up your pf usage properly is though.
for gaming is usually a good idea to setup the initial size and the max size no more than 3x larger than the initial.
usually is best to set the initial size to about 1.5x the amount of ran that u have.
its best to set it up on a hd that doesnt have the boot/os on it. its also best to spread it accross several phsycial drives(donot use several partitions on the same drive) if u have the chance to do this(donot do this on a mirrored raid). windows will automatically use the fastest drive available.

anyway turning this off is not a good idea.

Thanks.  I set my VM back to "computer controlled" I added a 2nd gig of ram last night and OMG!  I was all ALONE on new maps when they loaded.  I had actually made it to the hotel flag on karkand, killed 1 enemy right b4 I climbed the ladder then the rest of my squad spawned on me and we took the flag.  I almost felt like I was cheating...  nahhh.
Now the enemy in that game that had 30 kills and 0 deaths and took the gold... I wonder how he did it... but I didn't get his name so I could look at his stats.  One of the guys on my squad was telling me about something similar he had seen and when he cheked the stats on the guy after only 1 month of playing he was a 2nd Lieutenant and was carrying a kill to death ratio of 25:1.  I guess there's some cheats that work in the game?

I never considered this.. With my setup (Athlon XP 3200+, 512Mb x 2, GeForce 6600GT 128Mb), I've played high terrain, high texture, everything else on medium, no AA, 1024x768@85Hz and average 45-60FPS..

Lemme see if this will allow me to make that all any higher ^^

That's almost my old system (although I had a 2800, not a 3200).  Check my KPM graph.  You can really see where I upgraded my system in late December.  Not sure if it was the video card, 6600gt to a 7800gt, or the CPU, 2800xp to amd64 3500.  I just put a 2nd gig of ram in last night and I swear that made more of a difference than EVERYTHING else.  It helps that my new system has 4 ram slots so I was able to use the 2 1 gig kits I have.
When new maps load it would take a LONG time to start the map.  Now I'm loaded in and ready before everyone else.  It's only been 1 night though, but I could not pull myself away amazed at how fast I was in the game and running.
I wonder how my old system would have done with just a 2 gig upgrade.

Ah... The good old days.. When it was all fields round here and games fitted onto a single floppy...
