How good can a laptop for 1100 Euros be?

I'll start going to uni next month, and I think having a laptop would be good, since I need a new computer anyways.

I have 1100 Euros (=1600$, 860GBP)to spend.

Now, what can I get for that amount of money? I don't need fancy stuff like an integrated webcam or a fingerprint reader. What I'd like to have is a 17" screen, a decent GPU (Farcry2 will probably be the next game I'll buy) and at least 2GB RAM.

Can I get something decent for my money, or is it not enough?

Check out the Dell website. They have some pretty good laptops for around about £860 that have a good gaming graphic card, 17" screen, 4gig Ram, dual core CPU, also you can get them on a buy now pay later credit agreement.

You can find a pretty fucking awesome laptop for that much money. In Germany, at least. I imagine the prices in Germany are similar to what they are here in Austria and if so, you can get almost whatever you want. Just pop over to Saturn or Media Markt and see what they have in stock. If you have Cosmos in Germany, that's another good store.

high res screen and a good full keyboard. Way nicer to work with. Better hardware. Often better prices. Run cooler. If you're too weak to carry one you're a wimp. They aren't much heavier than a 15''

Loads of BF2s guys have 17'' and carry them to school/uni/work everyday

I took a look at some online stores, and from what I've seen I can get a good processor and sometimes up to 4 GB RAM. that's nice. But the GPU is mostly either a geforce 9300 or 9500GS. I thought those cards aren't that great. All the laptops with a 8800 are at about 2000 Euros.

I gues I'll have to go with one of those 9500...

the best GPU I could find on alternate is this. It is 1200€ though.
if you don't want to pay for a 9700GT, they do have a couple with a 9600GT that are in your budget

Yeah they are pretty big. I have a 17" laptop, but it is more of a 'Stay at home' laptop than one which you can take about with you.

Please, 8.9" EEE PC. Eat that. Less than 1kg. You know nothing of mobility.

If you want to take the plunge, you can try an Acer machine. I would personally recommend against Acers, but a lot of them come with some really good vid cards. My girlfriend's here is an Aspire 5601 with a 512MB ATi X1300.
