I got cable internet and a wireless router at my house a few days ago.

Router is Netgear CG814GCMR

My main system is connected to the router directly through an ethernet cable.

I was playing around with the wireless last night, I went into the router and made some minor changes, just messing around.

My brother lives in the apartment behind me so I phoned him and we tried to see if he could pick up my wireless signal. I changed my router default password to be sure no one could change anything and I turned off the security completely and he was able to see it and connect.

I listed the wireless SSID name as "THE DEVIL 666"

My brother and I talked for a bit and then he signed off my system and went to bed.

I stayed up for a few more hours messing around in my system and on the net.

Right before I was gonna crash I looked to see if anyone was connected to my wireless since I had left it on unsecure.

There was this system connected to mine via the wireless, it listed the systems name, MAC address, IP and that it was connected through 802.11

I thought it was kinda cool and thought nothing of it because I planned on banning his MAC before I went to bed so he couldnt use it again.

Right before I did that I noticed that he/she had changed the SSID from "THE DEVIL 666" to "THE DEVIL SUX"

I quickly banned his MAC address and checked my system/router to make sure he/she did not change/alter any major settings or anything.

The only thing that concerns me is how was he/she was able to change the SSID like that? I had changed the default router password before I went unsecure to prevent that kind of thing. Is it easy to change the SSID without getting into the router and I am worried over nothing?

I need to figure out how to only allow my brothers MAC address to connect and keep everyone else out. Fun with computers

easy, put a password on it that only you, and your bro know, no need to ban anyones address

lol I think I read a story one time about a guy trying to set up his wireless router first time only to realize days later that he had connected to his neighbors and locked the guy out of his own router

I guess its good that you banned him before he put a password on your router

Thats what I am worried about, a router has default passwords, I changed the one for superuser but did not change the one for admin before broadcasting unsecure.
I think the guy who connected to me last night changed the password for ADMIN.

If I change the password for superuser would that automatically change the one for admin too, because after last night I am not able to log in under ADMIN, I can only log in under SUPERUSER.

Should I still be able to log in under ADMIN ?

If I manually reset the router and change the default passwords for both ADMIN and SUPERUSER should I be ok?

I banned his MAC address but not before he changed the password for admin can he still get into the syste/router?

I don't get why people have problems with wireless internet. The only way you can connect to my router wirelessly is if you have that ridiculously long and complex key that's on the underside of the router itself (which is the only place to find it)

Of course if someone is bothered enough they probably could try and hack their way into it somehow, but I doubt I have any uber hackers around me that want to desperately steal my internets.

It's your fault for setting your router to those free-for-all settings so don't come here crying. It's annoying when people make simple things seem more complicated than it is, because of their own stupidity.

Unless you have a reason to leave it unsecured (lol network sniffing) just reset the router and set up a WPA2 password. If the admin account still had the default pass, he could have easily logged in and changed whatever he wanted

if your secured your wlan with wpa it's pretty much impossible to hack. WEP on the other hand is no problem, I do it all the time

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I only left it unsecure so my brother could see if he was close enough to pick it up.

I did not come here to cry, only to get advice and opinions, asshole

For the windows user yes, not for Linux users

aircrack-ng takes bloody ages when you're using a random long password. The only useful way of attacking WPA is with a dictionary attack, which is useless if you use a random pass.

Take a guess what I'm using to access WEP networks

so if I changed the default password for SUPERUSER, would that make me not able to log in under ADMIN with the default password?

I don't know your router, but usually you'd have to change both

that means the guy changed the default password for the ADMIN account because I did not change that one before going unsecure.

If I manually reset my router will that set both ADMIN and SUPERUSER back to default password?

Thank you for all the replies.

resetting the router will reset everything back to factory defaults

Whatever the default settings are it will go back to that.

OK so I reset my router and I changed both default passwords this time.

My question is next time I see the guy connected to my wireless how hard would it be to mess with him?

Step 1: Reset to default
Step 2: Change passwords for all users that can gain access to router..not hard to guess admin/admin or admin/pass
Step 3: Hide your SSID
Step 4: Set a WPA2 preferably AES key

I wouldnt worry to much about banning MAC addresses, they can be easily spoofed these days.

Pretty safe after those steps im thinking, unless they run Linux or Backtrack (Kismet), no1s safe from Linux lol

I will not broadcast as unsecure anymore unless I want him to connect so I can mess with him.

On my roter we can't have a WEP key cos my brother and sister use Mac pieces of shit, and it doesn't let them in with WEP enabled.

So we have MAC filtering. There's a setting which blocks all MAC addresses, except for ones you allow.

I mostly just want to mess with the guy now that my router is secure.

I am gonna use RETINA network scanner and see what he is running and plan my attack from there.
