Hello everyone, I'm in the market for a reasonably priced HTIB for my LCD and PS3. Looking to spend 300-999 USD.  I want to stay as reasonably inside that budget as possible.  Any suggestions? I do have one question\concern, can I run the video signal throgb the hdmi from the ps3 into the tv then run an optical cable from the tv to the stereo for audio? I figure this option will save money if its possible. Thanks in advance bf2s techies!!!

Well at home i got my PS3 plugged into my 50" plasma thru HDMI, problem is i want my PS3 with surround sound not the crappy TV speakers, i did heaps of research and it turns out all u need is an optical cable from PS3 to your receiver and you can get hdmi video and surround sound audio from the optical...problem is my receiver doesnt have an optical jack at the back lol cause it to old....so if you dont have that problem then go ahead and plug optical from ps3 should work perfectly fine, alway check that you have enough jacks at the back lol...i sure didnt

I didn't know the ps3 had an optical output, huh.. I have a 40gb model.. My tv has an optical out so my logic is that it would just digitally route the sound from the tv to the theatre system?? Also any suggestions on a good system would be apprecated! I know pc's not speakers lol

yep, the PS2 also had an optical.

place to start

that should work.  One thing to remember is that you want to minimize the number of components the signal travels through.  Probably wouldn't really matter, but something to remember.

For that price range, you need to be looking into Denon and Onkyo. Although, the more I look around, the more I'm not finding anything about Denon anymore. They used to have a system that had a Denon receiver and Boston Acoustics speakers. They have the best home theater in a box systems you can buy for that price range. Never, EVER, buy Bose, because you are being ripped off. They are overpriced systems with mediocre sound (a typical review will state this, specifically pointing out the lack of mids).

I highly recommend this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6882120123
I've got the 5.1 version, that's probably 1.5 yrs old, and it really has incredible sound. There are tons of inputs on the back of the receiver, and it decodes surround through the HDMI inputs, something that you don't find on the cheaper systems (they act as pass throughs and only take in the video, requiring you to use an optical cable to get the sound to the receiver). It also comes with a pretty good upconverting DVD player, that I use quite a bit.

In general, you should always consider Onkyo when looking at audio equipment. In my opinion (and many other people's, just read some reviews), they are one of the best.

Get Onkyo. It should have HDMI input on the receiver, so you can run your HDMI from your PS3 to the receiver and an HDMI from the receiver to the TV. You'll get the sourroundsound through the HDMI to receiver setup, and 1080p from the output from the recevier to the TV.

Pretty easy setup IMO.

I looked @ the onkyo system last night, just wasn't sure about the hdmi thing. I don't want to lose any picture quality, is that even a valid concern?

What Bell said. My father-in-law has the same setup I stated (w/ just a receiver and aftermarket speakers) and the picture/sound is amazing. I might be getting an Onkyo with my income tax return this year. Hopefully a 67" LED DLP Samsung as well.

oh btw:

With an A/V reciever, you're going to be setting it up like this:

PS3, DVD Player, Cable box === HDMI === Reciever === HDMI === TV
=== Sound Cables === Sound system

so no need for SPDIF cables etc, as you won't need your Audio reciever anymore.

well the only device I have now is the PS3 running into the tv 42" Toshiba REGZA.. The tv is like a month old, I'm using a 3 foot monster hdmi cable from the ps3 to the tv, so would it be ok to get a cheaper cable to go from the ps3 to the receiver and use the good monster cable from receiver to the tv? Or should I just spend the coin on another monster?

Monster is over priced and doesn't do anything differently than a Belkin hdmi cable.

True that.

You can really get cheap HDMI cables and they work fine. The reason is that they're digital, which means that power supplies and high level signals won't ruin the signal running through your HDMI cable. However, if you're running component cables, then you should really put down the money for properly shielded, high quality cables, because those are analogue cables and as such can be affected by other cables and noise sources in the vicinity.

This is true, since it is digital, its more so a case of its all or nothing, theres no need to spend silly money on a cable.

Been there, done that.

I got my 6-10 ft DVI cable for only $50 (Belkin). Awesome cable, never failed me.

Sure, that'll work fine, I've got a 20$ HDMI cable that's been working fine for awhile now.

So it does. My mistake, sorry about that. If you want 1080p upconversion, you'll want to look at this one:
