Ok so I finally finally have my new PC. Which I'm proud to say is the first one I've built

Intel Core 2 Duo E840 3.00GHz - NVIDIA GEFORCE 8500GT 512MB - 3GB Corsaire DDR2 - Windows Vista Home Premium

Right so there's the basics. The reason I didn't get a 9800GT or a 8800GTS 512mb is because my computer case is very small and liquid cooled. Because I needed a small thing to carry in the airplane. I bought my PC in USA during vacation because here it's too expensive in Switzerland.

Right so anyway I want my graphica card to go FASTER!   So I DLed this thing called RivaTuner. I did what the guy said on Youtube and I got my PC up to 65 °C Oh the joy right? Isn't 55 the max 0_o ??!  Anyway my CPU heat meter didn't beep to tell me it was overheating. Was it?

Right well anyway I put the settings back to normal till you guys can tell me how I should overclock and to how much. And what's a good temperature. Right now I'm doing 45°C average.

EDIT: where are my manners.   Please guys

most CPUs shouldn't go above 60-65°. GPUs are fine well into the 90's. Use real temp to monitor the CPU temps. To overclock the GPU use Freezer's sticky.

Not sure what a good overclock for a 8500GT is though Even with a big OC on the card, you won't really get any decent 3D performance out of it. That GPU just plain sucks for gaming

EDIT: If you're hitting 65° with water cooling on a stock e8400, it's likely that something is wrong. Did you drain the system before taking it on the plane? Air bubbles in the loop can kill cooling performance. Mounted properly?

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I don't know who told you that having a 3 Ghz dual core CPU is like having a 6 Ghz cpu, but they are wrong. It is like having a 3 Ghz CPU. The cores do not add together.

Anyways, congrats on building your first system. Read freezer's guide. You need to be more specific about the temp, I can't tell if you meant the CPU temp or the GPU temp, because overclocking your GPU shouldn't raise your CPU temp, and you can't overclock your CPU with Rivatuner.

While you oc'ing your GPU, make sure to OC the CPU too, I managed to get it up to 4.0ghz today

not an amazing feat, but whatever

what sort of Vcore are you running? VID?

Right well it's a Shuttle Glamor gaming case. The motherboard and liquid cooling are already built in. All I did was put in the CPU, memory, graphica card, hard drive, disk drive, and uhh...I think that's it...

Anyways I'm using something called "Core Temp 0.99.1"   So supposably my CPU heat is going out the roof when I overclock my GPU on my graphics card. But yeah, until technology makes 8800GTs smaller then I'm stuck with my 8500GT...unless I put this mobo in my old computer case, could I do that? Probably won't anyway.

facepalm.

On topic, read my guides, they're stickied for a reason.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

lol I don't remember where I got that idea   But then if it's a 3.00GHz processor and it's a DUEL core then doesn't that mean 2?

I repeat once again: Two cores DO NOT EQUAL twice the clock frequency. It equals more parallelized computing. Instead of one core taking care of all processes, each core takes care of half of them. In theory, not exactly true in practise, but the same thing.
