I just found an old Mac with OS 8 on it, and I'm amazed by the speed and simplicity of the operating system.

Is there a way I could get it on my PC?

Is that possible or will there be hardware conflicts?

EDIT: Or any newer Mac OS, because I'm sure newer ones are better.

EDIT2: On a side note, is there anyway I could upgrade the Mac I found? (Bondai Blue iMac)
Would need to run Lightroom 2, connect a couple of external hard-drives, Photoshop CS3 (if possible), extra RAM and processor?

You're not gonna run anything advanced on an original iMac. It's basically a Pentium 2 300MHz.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Which is why I asked if I could upgrade it.

imacs aren't made to upgrade really.  Plus even if there is any better processor or anything that could be put in it is would still suck by todays standards.

You can't upgrade your 2003 P4 to a modern CPU, why do you think you could upgrade a 1998 MAC to something decent?

Yes, you can put OS X on it, they have a whole room of those at my school running OS X but it's kind of sluggish on them compared to the newer white ones (LCD form factor) that were obviously made for it with their 1.8GHz PowerPC proc and 512MB of RAM.

They have similar boot times to each other but on the original iMac, it takes a little bit longer for it to initialize things like opening a menu or program, whereas it would be almost instant on a newer Mac.

As for upgrading it, I don't even know where the components are located on it and they're probably soldered on anyway.  Google may be able to help though.

Even if you could upgrade macs, there's no way anything decent would be compatible with that system.

Upgrade a Mac!

You could get a version of OS X that'll run on a PC, though hardware compatibility can be flakey.

Would you name some specifics? I hear this nebulous phrase often when people talk about the MAC OS and Palm OS.

He's given enough specifics.

Original iMac G3 running Mac OS 8. That's all we really need to know to tell him there's no point. Even if it could be upgraded he wouldn't be able to get components, since they are only available to Apple service providers and they fall off support after 5 years and then no one can get parts (except off eBay).

Doesn't matter, my dad pulled the plug out the wall and fried it anyway

I google'd a bit and found a few pages on OSX on a PC, and I'm going to have a bash at it tomorrow, and I'll tell you all about it.

This may help.
