http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103280 - AMD Phenom 9850 2.5GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor Model HD9850XAJ4BGH - OEM

(Needs O/S and Graphics card, the one that was in my wishlist is sold out, and thermal paste)

Basic Specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom 9850 2.5GHz

RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2

GPU: (Probably) 8800 512mb G92

O/S: Windows Vista Ultimate x64

Now, I sort of just picked the CPU and the PSU and the RAM, so can you guys tell me what you think? Or post something better? Hows that Processor, im not sure about AMD these days (btw I made an Intel based CPU and it cost about 1500, Intel is just a tad too expensive, and no we cant spend another 200$ for a 1.5x better computer)

Im mainly concerned about the Mobo, he wont Overclock, and I'm lost on motherboards theses days, so feel free to replace that too (not too expensive though)

I'm trying to keep the total cost around 1200-1350 including everything (except peripherals)

What he will be running: Games like Crysis, Supreme Commander, BF2, etc. (So some high resource hogs) and probably a lot of programs (Messengers, Firefox, iTunes etc.)

Thanks for taking a look guys, and remember this isnt the final build, but were going to need to order it soon... Thanks

something like that intel processors are much faster then amds. If he has no plan to overclock just replace the thermal paste with the one I suggested and the cooling will be more then adequate.

Sweet, thanks

PS: Is that Gigabyte card good? or can I get an EVGA card? (step up, replacement etc. I just like the company)

edit: Does EVGA even make Radeons?

$1130.90

Scratch the monitor if you don't need it. Brings you down to approx. $930.91 leaves you several hundred dollars to play with. Maybe a better video card or a better/bigger case.

Edit: you don't need a quad core unless you're doing 3D/video rendering. Most applications nowadays barely use 1core to it's full potential.

4870 is pretty rape-o-licious. Next thing up from it is the 4870x2 or the 280GTX, but they are quite expensive. Yes Gigabyte is good, no EVGA does not deal with ATI cards.

Whats the main difference between our two builds?

edit: Fixed....

Looks pretty good to me. If your friend doesnt need the monitor, IMO go for a 4870 instead of upgrading the case. (Not saying the 4850 is a bad choice, as it quite a bit faster than the 8800, but the 4870 goes wooooosh benchies here)

What about ebug's processor vs. dill's quad-core?

I mean, Im trying to build the best computer for the pre-agreed price of about $1,300 so we dont really need to cut costs that much

the q9300 will hit 3.5GHz with some luck. The e8400 can easily do 4GHz+

Personally, if you're going for cheap get an e5200, decent mobo and a HD 4870 or even HD4870X2

You just gots to get a HD4850 or HD4870. As I am sure alot of people have told you in this topic. Also, I wouldn't go with AMD processor but with a Intel quad core, or a good dual core one. As Max already pointed out the e8400 can easily do 4ghz if not more. I am not up to date about the quad core processors but I think I speak for most people here that intel quad cores > amd quad cores

They are. AMD quads are slower but not much cheaper. Only in a heavily multi-threaded environment do they make any sense. For gaming, going with an intel dual core gives you the best performance, performance/$ and often performance/W

Now just to get it stable with reasonable voltages
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

System optimizes the voltages by itself. So it is stable

You're probably frying your CPU right now. As I've said before:

Wouldn't surprise me if it's running somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6V.

The auto voltage always overvolts. Adjust them manually

agree. You really shouldn't be going above 1.4V if you don't want to kill your CPU. I guess that would be called SWDS then

Good, though I would recommend a different videocard. That is overpriced for a 4850 and that cooler is.. passive? That's a pretty dinky heatsink to be passive.

This Gigabyte 4850 or..
This Powercolor 4850.

Powercolor's cheaper too.

I think Im going to go with the Gigabyte Thanks

Now, (might as well) while I'm at it, I need a good CPU Cooler... I was going to get This but its deactivated, I'm very pleased with that on my CPU right now, and I need one thats $50-$80

(I would go pick one myself but I'd much rather hear from people who actually own/use them to tell me what kind of temps they get)

Thanks for all the help you guys, so far im like $250 under my grand total of my previous build and this one is way better...

For an e8400 a Freezer 7 Pro will do. The OCs on those chips are anyhow voltage limited and not temperature limited
