Here's one of the new in-game cut scenes. It looks good, but i'm still skeptical about the game play mechanics of an rts on a console. I'll give it a try though.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
HOLY SHIT ANOTHER ARBITER!

Most console RTS's usually suck (SupCom being just one), but I think Halo Wars and EndWar (especially with it's voice commands) will change that.

GameTrailers put up a shitload of videos too.

Damn, I knew I should have made "baseless hate" more general..

While I agree that RTS's might seem awkward on consoles to most people and RTS's on PCs are generally better, the Halo franchise is too huge for Ensemble/MGS to fuck this up. They know they've got a lot riding on this.

Same with UbiSoft and EndWar.

lol, even if they fuck up (as they did with the others) people will love it because

A) It's halo.
B) It's an RTS, which they've never seen or heard of before.

While endwar has hope (being voice controlled) A controller just isn't right for an RTS game. I've seen plenty of the stuff they're doing, hotkeys to go back to base, etc... and I think It's brilliant, but it still won't work.

I also can't stand the instant training...

You seriously think people who own consoles have never seen or heard of RTS's? ...lol.

I see no problem liking an RTS just because of the genre or what it's based around. Why do you think people are so excited about EndWar?

I first played starcraft on the N64, it was my first RTS game ever.  Played it for about two years before getting the pc version. While the PC one was undoubtably better, the console version was still quite sound.

I have high hopes for Halo Wars

If you also own a PC, chances are you've heard of the genre. If you don't, well, I have console-only friends who've never so much as touched Starcraft or C&C.

The game can and will be shit, but people will go bonkers over it. It will do to RTS exactly what Halo did with FPS, bring an at best mediocre game to a genre-deprived audience.

You lucky man. I've had to suffer through that dog pile at numerous lan's.

The whole concept of the game still seems strange to me. If the other 3 halo games are to be believed you'd only need to create one master chief and then you win the game.

Not that it matters as it's on the xbox and i don't own one, so i'll just hang out for Dawn of War 2.

What, RTS just doesn't work with a controller. The controller is not precise enough to be used effectively on almost any RTS. EndWar is going to cover for that by making the game not need any precision at all, hence how general the voice commands are, now that may work but will it be fun? as for HW, it's going to be too difficult to select all the right units. Look at the demo, at the battle at the end he just selects everything and has everything fire, he doesn't maneuver or take have each unit in place to do the most damage, and that's because it takes to long. The reason RTS works so fluidly on a PC is because you can be extremely precise with your mouse, and you can ensure that all your units even in a large army are doing what they need to be doing.

It's not baseless hate, it's hate based on the fact that it's gonna be damn near impossible to make something fun given the severe limitations that they have.

Genre-deprived? Maybe the playstation players but guys who had N64s before the Xbox came onto the scene had plenty of fps experience. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, the Turok games, that messed up South Park one etc. etc.

Even if the controller does work out and it's playable, is there anything special about it? Other than being on consoles?

It seems like a standard RTS. Which isn't surprising from a series of standard FPSes.

Nothing like PC FPS, and no online multiplayer.

In the days of the N64 online multiplayer was just taking off tbh. 1996 (Goldeneye64) was early days for internets fps gaming tbh. Secondly, of course it was nothing like PC fps, it's played with a game pad and liberal use of auto-aim. Halo, no matter what anybody says, was still decent for a console fps. Yeah it has since been over hyped like crazy but that doesn't detract from the fact that it was decent and brilliant if you had a few mates and just wanted a laugh.

It was a pc fps using a console controller, basic fail right there.

you want fps games on your console either get a mouse or a motion sensitive gun controller (oh shit, you can't) or at least do something like the VATS system in F3 (which would not work in multiplayer)

It doesn't make sense that a large portion of consoles games are FPS, definitely the most hyped games are, and yet they still can't do them right.

They're all been fired anyway so what do they care? And I agree every console RTS is awful awful awful.

I'll be suprised if this isn't. I won't go by reviews because no matter what its like it'll get reviewed highly because of its name and MS's bribing.

(BTW. console RTS hate not Halo hate in this post)

Edit: Oh and yeah. Back in the day the N64's fps games ruled. I don't care what everyone says. Console fps games just aren't the same anymore.

Well the first Halo introduced Melee attacks, weapon carry limits, and vehicles into FPS games. And while other FPSes did it before Halo, Halo was the one that was really popular that made other games (like BF1942, and CoD) take the ideas and go further with them.

Also in 2001 when it came out, it was a really good game. It was a great game when it was released on the PC in 2003. It was still a fun game in 2004 when Halo 2 (whose gameplay was expanded, but nearly identical) was released, but by then Far Cry and Half-Life 2 came out so Halo 2 wasn't by any means groundbreaking, other than because it helped launch the XBox Live service and online multiplayer for consoles (even though PC's had online MP dating back to DOOM).

So the first Halo actually was an important and influential game. People only cared about Halo 2 because it continued Halo and launched XBL, and Halo 3 is just another FPS game tbh.

So that's why Miggle is wrong to say that all the Halo games sucked. The first one was great for when it came out (and still pretty fun now) and though the latter two weren't anything new, they can still be fun.

Even though I still stand by my statements that FPS games will almost always be better on PC than on consoles due to the vastly higher precision a Mouse&Keyboard control setup offers compared to the analog-stick controllers of game consoles, and that for the same reason console RTS games are all bound to suck huge donkey dong.

Well in 1998 System Shock 2 came out, It had melee weapons. In fact, System Shock 1 (1994) had melee weapons.

While yes, it had vehicles, they were hugely unbalanced and pretty much destroyed everything in sight.

Sure it was a big step in console shooter history, probably the only console shooter that was actually a big deal for the genre, but being a console shooter it was missing a lot of stuff the pc had been doing for the past 6 years.

And as the technology improved (online multiplayer, 360, etc...) they only made minor additions to the games and still sold them for $60, it's the same problem I have with madden, except madden improves itself more.

Doom, which you brought up, had online multiplayer and modding, which consoles still haven't managed to duplicate in the 15 years since its release.

First off I wasn't talking about melee weapons, DOOM had a melee weapons (the chainsaw and fists) in 1993 and so has almost every shooter ever. What Halo had was melee attacks, where you could hit an enemy with your gun. Something that was first done well in Halo and since a very large number of games (such as my example of CoD) incorporated it into their gameplay.

As for the vehicles being "hugely imbalanced", yeah the vehicles in Halo did suck compared to the vehicles in the BF games which you're more used to, but Halo was the first game to have vehicles that you could jump in and out of as you liked, and despite their poor controls, they were still fun to use and as such games like Battlefield and Half-Life 2 incorporated vehicles.

As for the sequels not improving much, that's true and I agreed with you in the post that you quoted from. However despite the lack of creativity in the sequels, the first game still had allot of gameplay elements that have been used in many other games that were first used effectively in Halo.

As for consoles games not having mods, well there are more than a few reasons why I'm not going to buy an XBox 360, let's leave it at that
