So I have Vista on my main rig, and vista networking=fail. I can see other PC's on my network, but cannot connect to them unless I type the ip into explorer, like //192.168.blah.blah

Also, no PC on my network can connect to my Vista PC. Even by IP. They get a "<ip> is not accessible. you may not have permission to use this network resource...blahblahblah"

I have Googled this matter several times and have not found anything that helps. Note that all the other PC's are using XP Pro. I am on the same workgroup. I have done all I know how to do to configure my network with Vista, but seeings Vista has virtually no options at all to set up a wired network, that doesn't amount to much. Network Discovery and file sharing is on.

So to summarize: Vista can connect to all XP pc's via IP only, and no other XP pc's can connect to Vista pc.

its weird but it can be done, in order to be seen you need to change your firewall for vista and allow other users to see and share the folder you want to share it is tough but if you fuck with it long enough, youll get it

go to Network and Sharing Center

make sure everything you need is turned on

click on view files i am sharing, to make sure the folder your trying to share is actually there

On XP computer go to Network center, the folders you will be able to access will say something like Users on xxxxxx PC, thats what mine says anyway, and all my shared files are in there

the networking for vista is the exact same as xp.  the protocol has not changed.  maybe the interface is a bit different, but anything you set up with xp is compatible with vista.  vista is just more secure by default.  from what i gather from your problem, you need to enable file and print sharing in your vista firewall (or third party if you have one.)  post if you can't figure it out.  oh and make sure the dns client service is started... that should fix your issue about only being able to connect to the other machines by ip instead of name.

ah there's a fix somewhere out there. (software add on for XP for recognising vista comps)

more direct to your situation:
I have now fixed my problem.
Although the permissions were set to "everyone" you also have to go to the
security tab, click edit, click add, type everyone in the box, click apply
and that should fix the problem everyone seems to be having hopefully.
you'll know what the references mean, I don't

Heh, I fixed it...sort of. In Network and Sharing Center, "Password protected sharing" was turned on. Apparently I overlooked that whilest dicking around in there the other 50 times >_>

So now I can access my E drive, but not my C drive from other PC's. I get the access denied crap. In the sharing tab under C properties, "Everyone" is in the permissions list with full permissions. So, how do I make that work?

if you dont give a shit about security, you can just give everyone modify rights to your computer by changing the 'security' (not the sharing) tab to give everyone modify rights.  but this is a terrible practice as then anyone who accesses your LAN can get into your vista machine.  a better practice is using your vista account to connect to the machine from the xp systems.  that's why password protected sharing is a good thing.

It's just my house, and I don't keep anything important on the partitions that I'm sharing so, it doesn't really matter.

Do you have auditing turned on? Do that then check your security log for clues.

edit:just in case:  Local Security Policy under admin tools -> Local Policies ->Audit Policies, check all except "Audit Object Access" and "Audit Process Tracking"

ymmv with the object access tracking.  that logs ALOT of info... so you really have to keep up on your log management.  and make sure you turn on the auditing for the folder you want to watch.  right-click the folder>properties>security>advanced>auditing

and if you have wireless... it isn't always necessarily you.  and i would consider your c: drive important, since it's your system drive and all your programs and shit.

I don't have wireless.

I don't think anybody in my house is going to sabotage my PC...
