After 2 years of development a new version of this popular player has been released. User interface also looks a bit better. I still prefer BSplayer but for those who want to have the latest version: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
I hate the new interface. What ever happened to the old one? Can't find shit in this "new and improved" one.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I haven't noticed any instability with the old one?
I rarely use it to view High Def sources, so that could be why I guess.
