Can someone really find your personal info on the net?

I received, a pretty elaborate, and, disgusting, threatning message today (on youtube). Some guy, basically threatned to slit my throat blah blah blah. Now, if I was reading this, I'd say, dude ignore it, but it is ever so slightly different when it's you. The message goes into all sorts of detail, as if its the alternate script to a chucky movie or something. There is a link to a video on youtube, that, is, just fucked up. But what is getting me more so, is it says, and I am getting your info.

I remember, when I was going for an interview, a friend of mine talking about how you can contact companies to check personal information on people. My question is, can you really just do that?

Am a bit un nerved sitting here. Probably more so because of the video. The message it's self, did seem somewhat manufacutred. But, I dunno, what are your thoughts?

I contacted youtube, but so far I have had no reply.

If you haven't given it out somewhere, they have to traceroute you, for which they need your IP, for which they need to do something like transfer a file directly from your computer. Sites like Myspace (or whatever) won't just give out your info to any random stranger.

So no, you're pretty safe.

Not without significant insider knowledge.

What do they have of you already? Your youtube user name. They can probably work out which country you are from. Maybe which state.

A search of your youtube user name is unlikely to reveal much information about you.

Your more likely to be threatened through myspace or facebook, as socialising sites often do have pictures of you, your street (you might show your street sign in a photo, your house, your house number) that's a good way to track someone down. Then find the address through google street view\google maps and try to compare the house photo's to those from google.

But enough of the stalker talk, with just a youtube username, and at best your IP, there's no way they can find you. Your IP might give away your ISP and general location of your suburb, but nothing more than that.

I'm pretty sure when you do signup to youtube, you provide that general information. So there are ways to find it. Although, nothing more than Country and State are given when you signup to most website services, unless they require payment\delivery options. Look at the information that is provided when you click on a username and you can find a lot about someone.

That's one of the great security features at bf2s.com - you can send a user an email through here, but the email address remains private.

If your youtube username matches your eBay account and you also regularly sell\buy items, I would worry. There's a chance you might purchase something from this guys E-bay auction and he recognises the username of his sworn enemy. Asks for your postal\shipping address and bang, he sends you a box full of anthrax.

Although the actual risk of this occurring is pretty low.
