yes it is possible but it all depends on the kind of hookups on your pc/laptop and tv and what kind of cables you have.

It is possible, but you'll get horrible picture quality. Sure your TV doesn't have VGA, DVI or HDMI in?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

What kind of TV? If it's a big HDTV, Sprint down to your nearest small computer store, NOT Futureshop, and buy a VGA - VGA Cable and a 3.5mm -3.5mm audio cable, the VGA goes into the Monitor jack on your laptop, and to the PC in jack on your TV, 3.5mm goes to Speakers out and Audio in.
Then, on your keyboard, since it's a laptop, you'll probably have to hold the FN key and hit one of the F keys that looks like a |0| (Line, box, line)

If you DON'T have an HDTV, then it's unlikely that it'll work, MAYBE with a desktop you can use S-Video, but not on most laptops, and the quality will be horrendous.

Not that bad. You're making it sound a lot worse than it actually is. S-Video is perfectly suitable for anything that is DVD quality or below.

Since he just wants to watch a football match with it, he should be fine, especially with it being streamed from an online source.

Connectors only need to provide quality up to the quality of what you want to play through them. Since his source will be of a low quality anyway, there is no reason to use VGA or DVI (though I am not disputing that the image quality would be better through them), in many instances the softening of the image that occurs with these types of lower spec analogue interconnects is more suitable for low quality images anyway.
