and so I come to lie in prostration before the sound wisdom of BF2S.

I had extremely wide feet up until I was maybe 12 and therefore haven't really run the gauntlet of nike/reebok/adidas type of shoes, I just wore whatever I could find that would fit. Often that was New Balance, which I liked up until about a year ago when they dropped the line of shoe I liked, and what they replaced it with is shit in my opinion. I am open to just about any brand, and my feet aren't really wide anymore but if a brand runs very narrow it might be a problem.

Just about the only sport I play is racquetball, but because of my young and supple joints I don't necessarily need a lot of ankle support. I do however need grip on the slick court. At the same time I don't want just a skater shoe or something, because I want good grip in mud/wet grass kinds of situations. I don't go trail running every day or something, but when the need arises for whatever reason I don't have a problem getting dirty and some of the shoes I had in the past seriously let me down in this respect. Bonus points for shoes that are fairly waterproof and/or don't wear out easily. Look is pretty much irrelevant.

I realize that's a lot more than most of you care, but I don't really know who else to ask for advice about this stuff.

tl;dr

need quality all-purpose tennis shoes

Take a look at Asics, they make some great shoes.

I play racquetball (tournament this weekend!), and I wear the Nike Air Monarch. My size is 12 with a wide fit of 4E, and I find that the shoe is very reasonable for on court grip and stuff.

It holds up well (5 years and counting).

The only problem is that it's white and that means that it stains easily, but as you said, look is irrelevant, so...

I second that. I got talked into trying them by a guy who ran off road 20-30k races and he swore by them. I was still in the Marines and that's the type of running we did and I loved them, payed like $100 for them but they are still great 3yrs later. Mine are the TN522

They also make your feet look a lot bigger.

That's the shoe that I kept getting for a couple years until they stopped making them...for me they worked fine for racquetball and they are made to be more of an outdoor shoe. I have the advantage of being young and don't necessarily need THE BEST support on the court, I just need reasonable grip. That doesn't rule out very much, but for example the last time I went to buy shoes I tried on a trail running shoe that was great, but it actually had mini-spikes I guess that made it slip a fair bit on slick surfaces. It probably would have been okay, but I would rather not slide into the wall repeatedly if I can avoid it.

Maybe I'm just being a nub, but I don't see the necessity for multiple pairs of shoes for the stuff I'm talking about.

thanks for the suggestions so far everyone

I've used Brooks for the past 5 years and I've loved every one of the shoes I've bought.  I mostly buy Brooks Adrenaline... and my feet are the same size as yours

Thats a shoe for running. In more "fancy" clubs they wouldn't let you in with those shoes just like they don't let people without tennis shoes play tennis on tennis court.
For indoor you need raw rubber-doesn't leave any marks and has a way better grip than running shoes. Running shoes have better grip on asphalt mainly cos of its deeper profile and different kind of rubber. Good hiking shoes have different rubber as well, called Vibram. The soles are too high on running shoes and you risk joint sprain (is this correct in English?). Indoor shoes have lower sole profile and are usually not as soft. I have different shoes for running, not even mentioning all the shoes I have. Was about to buy Adidas gazelle today for an upcoming marathon in two weeks (my Nike Skylons are getting wored out) but they didn't have my number.

Well you do need to look into multiple pairs of shoes.

Wearing your normal street shoes inside an indoor court will damage the floor. Sounds dumb, but all that dirt and grit will act like sandpaper.

Buy normal shoes and then buy purpose-built indoor court shoes. And don't say this BS about being young and not needing support because that's all it is: BS. Get an injury when you're young and you're stuck with the after effects for your whole life. Just pay for quality one time and don't worry, especially if you want the shoes to last you more than a year. You get what you pay for. Buy shit, expect shit.

Personally, though, as a normal do-all shoe, I prefer Adidas Sambas. I absolutely love them. I have two pairs: black/white and white/black and they're great. Perfect for walking around the city and doing whatever. They're also not a bad indoor court shoe, but I wouldn't use them like that all the time since that's not what they were designed for.

Go to a sports-supply store, though, and talk to someone there. Not Wal-Mart or Target. Actually find a sporting goods store and go talk to the shoe department people. Then find the court shoes and find out what fits best. Pick a few brands and models and then go home and read about them and see what else you can find. Then make your decision.

Ofc, selling sports equipment is my work. I have also been chosen to sell running shoes on the biggest Slovenian marathon where there will be hundreds of thousands of people and my Employer is the main sponsor of the marathon. Only the best salesmen get to go sell there.

Okay I go to a local recreation center to play racquetball, they're glad I'm there to actually play racquetball and not fucking break dance or write on the walls or some shit lol. Yeah joint sprain makes sense .Sup, we usually say sprained ankle though.

CaptainNismo:

I want to buy a quality shoe, that's the point of this thread, I'm just not sure I need multiple shoes. I realize that some support is necessary, but I don't need to be wearing a high-top basketball shoe kind of situation like I might if my ankles rolled easily. I'm not overweight, I am not clumsy, I am active, and the support provided by a general cross training shoe has never been problematic.

Thank you for the advice though.

edit: If I was going to buy two pair what should I be looking at for racquetball shoes?

Honestly, I am telling you to invest in the future. Buy a pair of shoes for the court and then another pair of shoes for everything else.

All it takes is one injury, one misstep on the court and you'll be wishing your feet were better supported. I am not saying buy like 3 or 4 pairs of shoes, just two pairs. Buy a good pair for the court, and then an OK pair for the daily grind of life.

I agree with Nismo. I presume your feet don't grow anymore (yes your feet actually grow your whole life but after you're lets say around 20-22 the growth is negligible). I have specific shoes for tennis, football, football or as you say soccer (indoor/outdoor) and for running-one Adidas goretex for running in woods, Nike skylons for marathons (extremely light and breathable) and Nike Pegasus with a Goretex membrane for running in heavy rain. Each serves a purpose and even though you might think that's absurd having so many shoes I still recommend having at least two sport shoes-one for indoor and one for outdoor.

I'm 17, but my feet haven't grown in about a year. At this point I'm wearing out shoes faster than I'm growing out of them, so I'm not too concerned with buying good shoes that I know I will be wearing a lot.

Out of curiosity what is your stance on gortex? I know there is quite a bit of controversy over it in the hiking world.

Yes, you really should have more than one pair of shoes, especially if youre doing intense sports.  I have tons of pairs of shoes, over 4 just for running alone and probably around 8-10 in total.  I realize that's probably overkill for you, but believe me, itll be better in the long run (pun ) if you get 2 pairs at least.

I have these for indoor.
http://store.nike.com/index.jsp?country … #redir=302
The only football shoes that have an air pillow in their soil which makes them very comfortable. You can use these for playing racketball since its rubber doesn't leave any marks and the grip is really good.
For outdoor running New Balance are well known by their shoes and if you like your current ones then I think you should stick with them. But the best shoes for running in woods or mountains (trail running) and have the best grip are Salomon Ultra 3d pro which I also own.
http://www.altrec.com/salomon/mens-xa-p … nning-shoe
They won all sorts of tests for trail running. It depends on how much you're willing to spend. Also shoe laces are made out of Kevlar so they are extremely strong and do their job of holding your feet on one place very well.

Top running shoes manufacturers are: Mizuno and Asics

Sorry I would help but I wear a size 15 US shoe and have wide feet so there are around 6 pairs in a sports store I can select from.
