I'd love a good assault rifle or machinegun.  Imagine taking a browning .50cal rabbit hunting - BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM - no more rabbit problem!

Seriously, I admire the US's liberal stance on guns, and when I visit one day I'll be sure to spend a day at a gun range with something that can take more than 7 rounds at a time.

Another tidbit of info is that most gun owners have semi-auto replicas of assault rifles. The press still calls them assault rifles (which, to be fair, was what the '94 AWB called them), which confuses things a lot.

The original assault weapons were designed to be a compromise between the large, long, heavy battle rifles (Mauser 98) and the submachine guns (firing pistol caliber rounds).  The exact design purpose for the original Assault Rifles was CQC in towns, city streets, buildings.  They were designed to be shorter and easier to maneuver, like a SMG - but with nearly the same power as a full-sized rifle (what most video gamers would consider a 'sniper rifle' now).

In an easy to read format, I give to you the original Assault Rifle.  The direct predecessor of the AK-47, the MP5, the G3, the FAL.

I don't think the US government should be worried about the guns themselves, those aren't the real issue. Its the people that own them or are near them. They should focus more on gun storage and safety. People should have the right to own an "assault weapon" as long as they can store it in a locked area where no one else but the owner can get at it.
Their logic behind the bans is that it reduces crime, well as long as the world population increases so wont crime. As long as our economy keeps declining so wont crime. Instead of focusing time and money on banning the weapons, they should focus time and money on the issues that cause crime. Crime is the underlying factor here, now since controlling the worlds population is out of the question, shouldn't they focus on the economy and our 10 trillion dollar debt? If the economy starts to be repaired and things return (more or less) to normal then people will be relieved, some crime will go down (some, not all). There still will be gang shootings, always has always will. There still will be armed robberies, there still will be homicides. Its just how things go nowadays. Think of it this way, when prohibition started way back in the 1920s it was easier than ever to get cheap alcohol (cheap but not safer). Its the same thing with guns, most of these homicides and shootings that occur with "assault weapons" and other firearms, occur with weapons NOT purchased from a legitimate firearms retailer, they're purchased from gun runners on the streets of cities and on the borders.

Assault weapons... are a new topic. I seriously wouldn't vote for someone knowing their radical belifs but ignoring them because you beleive someone else will stop them from attempting to carry out their plan.

Granted I don't think he could take the guns away, but with Pelosi and the majority they have.... They'd make it so that only elitists like themselves could afford to own one.

Brad, I have to disagree here. Europeans don't "prefer not to have that 'freedom'", we have little choice : (1) since we don't have a history of widespreaded guns as in the US and we don't share that culture, there is no wide and open demand for guns, and (2) we are told by our Govt that we can not have weapons except on certain conditions.

People in the US have a different culture and history of gunownership than we have.  However I don't believe for a second that people in Europe have no guns, at the contrary, I believe that there might be he same number of guns going around here as in the US, be it more hidden, e.g. bought when registration wasn't requested and kept in the closet when the legislation changed. In my country it's that way anyway.

I remember when i bought my Benelli M1 i needed a license, but the shopowner offered me the civil version with long barrel (no license needed) and a seperately sold short barrel (no license needed for a barrel). So you can imagine how many people own guns that are not registered.

I own two guns, both registered according to the law, and I would like to keep them. However, in 2006 on a sunny morning some 18yo mofo went into a gunshop in Antwerp, dressed in black, combatboots and long black overcoat and with his head shaved, bought a Winchester Marlin 30.30 (no license needed) and went on a shooting spree killing a woman and a small child and wounding another woman before getting shot by police. As a result the laws changed again, so by the end of this month I'll have to give up my guns, unless I register them for sport, hunting or selfdefense. And can you guess how many people registered their unregistered weapons? Not many.

My brother got banned for life from a "lasertag" place.  He knocked down a wall and went CQC..... He used the butt of the laser rifle to some poor kid's head and then shot him after it knocked him down.  The lights came one and he got the ban hammer.... good times..  What was your post about again?
