His money came from the middle class.mtb0minime wrote:
Yay for Obama spending all this money on advertising yet trying to remain one of the guys who fights for the middle class and isn't the typical rich dude.
He can do that after the Presidency.[TUF]Catbox wrote:

i lol'd"Wait ... can't you drive through the billboards in Burnout?" asked a third.
So can McCain's campaign money. Works both ways, buddy.[TUF]Catbox wrote:

But you're missing the point m3thod, Obama is an evil, Communist with Islamic fundamentalist tendencies whereas the Iraq war is liberating millions of Iraqi Muslims and allowing Sunni and Shia Muslims to build a brighter future for themselves, side by side in harmony.m3thod wrote:
I wonder how many bellies the (tax payer) funds used for the Iraq war could have filled compared to the funds donated by obama fans used for campaign advertising....

Yet he's also trying to stamp out, via court action, advertising against him. Yep, he's quite the 1st Amendment defender.Braddock wrote:

None. Because if the Iraq War hadn't happened all that supplemental spending (which is nearly exclusively what funds the Iraq War) would never have been levied. People keep thinking that that money would have been spent elsewhere...it wouldn't have been spent at all.m3thod wrote:

My understanding was that he was asking for existing laws to be exercised to stamp out false rumours and lies being spread about him... unless I've missed subsequent stories about him, feel free to fill me in.FEOS wrote:

Well, maybe it should be spent elsewhere. I'm sorry but when it comes to shaky moral ground spending billions on a war of folly easily beats spending on advertising in a campaign race... I mean for fuck's sake he needs to win the race to begin with if he actually wants to implement any of his supposed sweeping changes.FEOS wrote:

That would be a radical upheaval of the entire election campaign system and as we all know the US don't do radical reform... not in their own country at least!oug wrote:

instead of buying ads they could both do something useful - which btw would probably benefit their campaign a lot more than a stupid billboard.
Ah capitalism, gotta love it. Nothing is sacred.SgtHeihn wrote:

I'm not saying the two are even comparable, nor is anyone else, I believe. It was m3th that brought the issue up. I was merely pointing out that 1) the notion that the Iraq money would have been spent absent the war is ludicrous and 2) that wondering what could have been done with that money instead of funding the war is inane. It wouldn't have been spent...and if it had been spent on social programs, the country would be just as in debt as it is now, and people would be screaming for blood over that instead of over the debt imposed by the war.Braddock wrote:

You're also missing the point... no one is saying the Iraq money would have been spent feeding hungry people, they are saying what if it was?
But it was all organized and stuff.usmarine wrote:
why didnt he give that money to the shitty community in south chicago which was shit when he got there and was still shit when he left?

You're saying that as if the money used in the Iraq war materialised out of nowhere along with backing assets. It might be supplemental spending, but the bill doesn't just disappear. It's paid using money that could've been spent elsewhere.FEOS wrote:

You're missing the point. It's money that wouldn't have been spent otherwise. Yes, the government could have increased spending dramatically, but that would only have increased the deficit...just as the Iraq War spending has. It's not money that would have been in the budget otherwise...it's not an offset from other programs. It is new spending. New deficit spending. It comes from borrowing from others. I never implied otherwise.mikkel wrote:
