For an outsider, put simply it looks like this.
Clinton/Democratic Years. Nation debt and defecate lowers. Economy is good. Diplomacy triumphs over war mongering (except bombing for blowjobs.) with Clinton helping to broker several peace deals. N.Ireland for one.
Bush/Republican Years. National debt spirals out of control, banks run rampant, Economy is fucked. 2 extremely expensive and futile wars over lies which cause ordinary American to die and rich CEO's to profit. Hallieburton etc.
It looks like that to many insiders, as well. At least those who don't bother to look beyond the surface or accept what makes them comfortable.
People too often (especially non-US folks) overlook the criticality of the Executive-Legislative Branch interaction. During the Clinton years, the Democrat-controlled Executive Branch had to deal with the Republican-controlled Legislative Branch. One was kept in check (particularly budgetarily) by the other. Remember, Congress controls the purse strings.
During the Bush years (until 2006), it was a Republican-controlled Executive with a Republican-controlled Legislative...with heavy partisanship on both sides, mainly stemming from the Clinton impeachment followed by the 2000 election debacle. So party victories became more important than the fiscal stewardship seen throughout the nineties. Rubberstamp Congress to a spendthrift Executive who eschewed all his "fiscal constraint" pre-election promises resulted in unfettered spending and massive deficits.

Now how can you say looking at the above that the Democrats can fuck things up even more? They are saying this recession will be the worst for generations. Somehow its always Clinton's fault.
You seam to accept that the republicans have made a total mess and the Democrats are going to inherit it "Let the libs get hammered for the next four years." Yet your right wing mind set can not see or support the Democrats efforts to push change and do something about the current status quo. Partisan politics are really making a mess of the USA splitting the country along traditional family/state support as apposed to the party which is obviously more competent getting the vote.
Common sense should dictate that if one Party makes a total fucking mess for 8 years then the Party that guided the country through its last prosperous time is the one you should be supporting.
The Dems aren't pushing change. They are pushing more of the same. More unfettered spending. More governmental bloat. More government intrusiveness into the lives of average Americans.
The bottomline is that the total fucking mess isn't all on one party. The Dems have had two years to do something with their Legislative majority and they've squandered it on partisan politics. Much of what has come home to roost recently was started during the Clinton administration...change in economies the size of the US's are a long time in coming.
It's not as simple as many of you make it out to be. It's not that Republicans are evil warmongers and Democrats are pussy liberal pinkos. Much of what we've seen is the result of putting party before policy--on both sides.
