A while back I had a friend that was an extremely heavy torrent user, he had 50MB/s Down and maxed it out almost 24/7(Upto his monthly limit).

As you may've guessed, all that stuff has to go somewhere, so when I asked for a copy of Partition Magic, he pulled up some database program that I never caught the name of, did a quick search, then opened a drawer on a standard dresser. Inside were about 1500+ CD-R's all in little white envelopes labeled by "Database Code" all organized and pretty.

I never caught the name of the program and we aint friends any more so I;m wondering if anybody knows of something like that software, I'm loving my archives of full seasons of TV shows and other crap, and my Harddrive's starting to get slightly full, but before I start transferring stuff, I wanna find that program to make it easier to keep track.

Suggestions?

Why not just write the name of the show and what episodes it contains on the DVD and then file it alphabetically? That's what I do.

Yeah, but I also has Movies and software and other crap I'd like to backup, If I have a backup DVD with BF2, The Sims, and TF2, then would that go under B, T or S?

Edit:

That's what I plan on doing, ie
"8 - 10"
Database code ^^

I guess I missed the point.

Why have a "code" that you have to search to find on the PC, and then find the matching CD, when you could just label the CD with what's actually on it?

So then burn them each on their own DVD? DVDs are super cheap.

Edit: Misread your post
You don't look up stuff inside the drawer, you pull up the DB app, search for a program, it'll spit out a number/code. Then you open the CD drawer, find the coded CD, pop it in install soft.
/edit

Because once you get to 1500+ CD's(Literally, imagine a dresser, now imagine it FULL with CD's) with varying content on em, it becomes a bitch to find crap.

As far as labeling, yeah sure, if I don't find the program I'll suck it up and label them, but I don't need 15 people telling me something that I didn't ask for.

If you know the name of the program, say it, otherwise, bugger off, kthx

Yeah, as I wrote my previous post I was thinking Excel(It's totally the database app ) but what he had didn't look like either

If nothing comes up, I'll prolly resort to Access.

Excel is so NOT the database app.

Access is the database app.

Excel is a spreadsheet.

Sheesh.

I'll preface with this: I have no idea what the actual software you're looking for is called, but I have a substitute idea.

Just a simple spreadsheet. Give a number to each CD and record what drawer/row it's in and store them in order. Once you know which drawer and row, box, whatever smaller segment it's in it shouldn't be hard to find a numerically labeled disc.

Yeah, I know that, but my Drama teacher keeps her marks in Excel, I was just going through my pile of unlabeled CD's and one of them was from my mom's Ex's work, and IT had a bunch of "Database" type stuff in Excel files.

Same with people using Word for presentation reports, grow some and use Publisher, n00bs.

My thoughts exactly, then Scorpion mentioned Access so I'll use that.

But then what happens when you add more to the collection that fits in between some stuff? Some of the stuff will be alphabetical, and the rest will just be random.

I still think just labeling the CD/DVD would be best. What happens if you lose your database? You'll end up with a bunch of discs with random numbers on it....

Or I could label em both ways, a Number for quick lookup, and file listings for browsing (y)

And they'll be sorted by 2 numbers, X - XX The first being a basket / row number, the second being the actual CD

That'll only work if you also use the spoon.

Why the fuck do you need to do that with a database?

You could do all that with Excel if you wanted a simple "search for what you burned and then put that cd" tool.
