a reformat and countess reinstalls later my 4870s seem to be folding nicely. @ 800/950 they are doing 3700ppd each

Almost as good as 9600GTs!!

Why is my 4800 x2 @ 2.85ghz SMP getting less PPD than my single-core 3500 @2.2? Before, I thought it was the gpu client fuxing with the cpu client, but the gpu client is not running in this screenshot.

Just checked fahinfo.org. The 2606's preform a lot worse than for example the 2605's. Guess you'll have to wait that one out and hope for a better WU. If your CPU supports visualization (which it should afaik) you could run a virtual linux machine. It tends to be more stable and net way more points
