It's completely different from Oblivion. It felt like I had to grind for everything gameplay-wise in Mass Effect but the graphics(360) and story were excellent.
I first found mass effect kind of boring but after a hour or two I really started to enjoy it.. I think its definatly worth the $30 for it over here.

Liked it for a few days, there's a LOT of elevators, you'll probably spend 1/3 of your play time standing still in an elevator.
The autosave is also pretty rare, so prepare to be dieing and loading, just to have to go up another 3 or 4 elevators.
The plot was interesting, but not good enough to spend much money on.
There's no ammo, weapons "overheat" if you fire them too long, but you can just use burst fire and not run into many problems with it, though I had a glitch where whenever my weapons overheated they never cooled down, which sucked when I had to melee attack every enemy. Eventually I died and had to go up several elevators.

All my friends (who played it on the 360) absolutely loved it.

It was good, but definitely overrated. I think it's worth the price, but it can get boring and repetitive.
And just to expand on the overrated thing, I don't mean by word of mouth, the praise I've heard from friends was pretty much deserved. I was extremely surprised to find Mass Effect the #1 game on IGN's Top 20 xbox games list though.

It's a good space-based drama/action game. The whole structure of everything is quite impressive, it does drag on a lot but that's all due to the depth of it. The actual gameplay's good enough, the side-missions are pretty much all clones though. Definitely worth a purchase.

Started playing the witcher and really liking it, but was thinking about maybe also start to play Mass effect.

Witcher is AWESOME! But pretty lenghty. Been playing for almost 3 Weeks now and just arrived in Chapter III (of V + Epilog).Eldu wrote:

I've played through ME 3 times since I got it for PC in July. The combat is what I enjoyed most, but some of the uncharted planet sidequests can get really repetitive. The actual planets that pertain to the plot, however, are awesome. I stopped playing when I had my xp, armor, weapons, mods, omnigel and credits maxed out, which made finishing a 4th run feel pointless. It's still worth buying as your character that you create in ME will probably be carried over into ME2.

Btw, I believe the PC version requires you to be online at all times for security reasons.
