Yes, that is very true.  I'm not trying to defend the man.  He was in very real terms a monster.

The first plans for streets that could be called "Autobahnen" were created in 1928. The first autobahn was built 1932, one year before Hitler got into power. He then just took the plans, refused to call the road that was already built "Autobahn", and then said he invented the stuff. He also only built them to have better ways for his tanks, but his propaganda worked.
The jobs he created are a lie. Women had to stay in the house and raise the kids, many people had to leave the country, others were sent to prison, and all of the workless that were left had to stuff that could be easily done by machines. The "Autobahnen", for example, were built with shovels.

I did not know the origin of the Autobahnen.  Interesting.
I am saying that many germans viewed Hitler as a hero in the late '30s.  The facts may have been unknown, or perhaps they denied them.  What I am trying to get across is the fact that differing perceptions had a great impact on Nazi Germany.  My grandfather's neighbor was a soldier for Nazi Germany.  He was defending his country.  He had heard rumors of some of the atrocities, but had no facts to back them up.  I certainly don't consider him an evil man, even though the government he served under most certainly was evil.

I hate German's and Nazi's, but there was actually a group of high ranking Nazi officers that tried to assassinate Hitler. They planted a bomb but fucked it up and got caught and Hitler survived, but they still thought he was bad news of Germany.
