Partitioning External HD

I'm wanting to back up my whole computer, including OS as an image on my external hard drive.

However, when I go to "system and maintenance>backup and restore center" and click "back up computer" it says:

So I'm thinking that if I partition the drive I'll be about to use it?

If I can how would I do it? I'm on "administrative tools>computer management>storage>disk management" which I think is the right place, but I'm not 100% sure, so if someone could guide me through it.

(On Vista btw)

Right-click on it in Computer -> Format -> Choose NTFS

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Is there anyway I can do it without wiping what's already on the drive?

No.

Copy everything on it to your local drive and then put it back.

Maybe partitionmagic, but if I were you, I would make a backup of the files anyway

Ok cheers. It's all backup stuff anyway, I just hadn't done the computer as a whole, just like media and games.

Several programs can do this.
