Vigilantes painted “SCAM” on the pavement in large, white letters near a speed camera in Potomac, Maryland. The sign serves as a warning to approaching drivers that the automated ticketing machine on the side of River Road is active. WUSA television used a helicopter to capture a unique perspective on the warning. Montgomery County jurisdictions are notorious for issuing as many speed citations as possible using ticket quotas, even though the practice is banned under state law. The county program generated $7.2m worth of tickets last year. The village of Chevy Chase used cameras to nearly double its entire budget, spending a significant amount that was promised for “public safety” instead on “beautification improvements.” The latest incident marks an increase in the number of anti-camera incidents in the US. Just two months ago, vigilantes struck four speed cameras in Gaithersburg.

I know there is going to be a "We in (insert European country here) all ready have this in our country douche" and most of us on here already know that. Its just that now in the US we are getting these speed cameras

They have to raise money somehow and this is better than increasing taxes.

We have a lot of speed camera's in Australia and have for years but we've worked out how to beat them and it is really easy, just stay below the speed limit and you'll never have to worry about giving them a cent!!  It isn't really that hard.

Is it one of those "go 59 or 61 in a 60 zone and we'll charge 500 bucks" kind of deals?  If not, cry moar and go by the posted speed.

It's the Old Line State, nub

Anyway, they need to invent variable speed limits. 45MPH on River Road at 10:30AM on a Wednesday is horribly slow. Pretty much everyone goes at least 55.

But when it's congested or in the dusky hours, 45MPH is fine. Simply make the signs digital and change based on the time of day and traffic congestion, at least for the major roads.

The same can be said for the beltway. I was going to Tyson's Corner the other day, where the speed limit is 55MPH for the most part... let's just say that 55MPH would be too slow even for the shoulder of the road. I had to do at least 65MPH to keep up with the right lane traffic.

Isle of Man?

Ever heard of it?

Basically, it has 0 Speed limit, the only proper place in the UK to have such a law.

And last year, the UK Gov put up a traffic monitoring camera - Note, NOT a speed cam.

I average 10 to 15 over as all the speed limits except housing developments are way too slow.

They can get away with it on the IoM, as it becomes life threatening for anyone in the immediate vicinity if you go over 40.

Speeding's only a problem if there's a discrepancy in the traffic speeds. In dense traffic which exits and enters a main road, a 60/80 km/h limit is good. However, and I speak from experience, there's no problem adding 100 km/h to that previous limit if the road is completely empty, or if there's no traffic exchanges.
Don't get me started about highways.

So ergo cameras are just for money...people do speed, because it makes sense--go faster, get there sooner. As long as they know how to drive (a wee bit of an issue in N. America) there's no problem.

Yea there is a newly paved freeway I-10 that has a 60mph speed limit as every one is going 75-80mph with such little traffic that goes through there.

Many of the motorways/highways around Sydney (Australia) have variable speed limits... its a pretty good idea, works well

as for speed cameras, all i can say is. welcome to our world.

120 mph in a 65?

That's an enormous difference though - in Australia the cops would be hauling his ass off to jail and confiscating his licence for a couple of years.

A good driver can always tell how fast HE is going without looking at the speedometer. n00b drivers on the other hand need to take the bus.

Doesn't matter if you have a note from an auto shop saying the speedometer was off they will drop the charge and give you a faulty equipment ticket which is a fine and a slap on the wrist. It doesn't matter if you KNOW how fast your going if your speedometer is off they have to drop the charge, thats how most lawyers get people out of excessive speeding if they know what they are doing.
