in the old days nothing used to even be open on sundays
In Petersburg Virginia, where I used to reside they had a "blue law". No alchohol was not your only worry. Nothing was allowed to open on sunday, with the exception of fuel stations, and grocery stores.
This law has since been repealed and Petersburg has joined the rest of us in the 21st century.

That and I think they open at 11:00 or 12:00 so people don't go into church drunk.
